Smarty Day Trip Series: Our Own High Point!

By Rachel H and Guest Blogger, Alison Nolan

Thus far, we have run numerous Day Trips about exciting, educational, and adventurous places to take your family outside of the Triad area. For the next few weeks, we are focusing on activities right here in our own Triad area!

This week, we will start with a blog written by Alison Nolan. She has highlighted some of her favorite family spots in the High Point area. We hope you'll make a day out of it and visit some of these places. At the end of the blog, be sure to add any other family-friendly venues in High Point that you think our readers would enjoy! Then stay tuned throughout the next few weeks as we hit other Triad cities! ... Rachel H

You may think of High Point as that little town that has Furniture Market – but there are also plenty of really fun things to do here! I have listed a few below that maybe you’ll look into because you just didn’t know about it before!

One of our most favorite parks in which to play is High Point City Lake Park – mailing address is in Jamestown but the name is High Point so we can claim it! (The link for the park is currently not connecting, but I am in hopes it will be fixed by the time this blog runs!) This park has so much for kids of all ages to enjoy. Want to wear the kiddos out? Bring them here and enjoy a very large playground area for big and little kids, amusement rides (a carousel!!), a fun train ride and more. The pool and waterslide opened for the weekends on May 29th and will open daily on June 14, 2010. There are fees, which are noted on the park website.

Park Description: 340 acre lake with boating, fishing, paddle boats, picnic areas with shelters, fishing boat and canoe rentals, amusement rides, train, waterslide, largest outdoor swimming pool in the state, miniature golf, gymnasium, playground and excursion boat.
602 West Main Street
Jamestown
336.883.3498 and Pool Phone 336.883.3501

Another great park in the area, which is a little smaller, is Gibson Park which is right off of Wendover. They have a small playground and some great walking/hiking trails. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes because you’re in for quite a hike. Warning - if you take your little ones and walk too far, you may be carrying them back! My little (Aaron) looked up at me and asked if I could carry him back because he was too tired which was about ½ a mile – there was a lot of whining on the way back…by both of us. There are also two baseball fields if you’re in for a friendly game or just a little practice.
5207 West Wendover Avenue
336.454.0259

There is also a campground in our area, Oak Hollow Campground, if you’re looking for a short and not too distant camping trip. I have to say I’m not much of the “camping type” but I hear it is very nice. It’s also close to the Reitzel Tennis Center if you want to walk just a short way to play a game. They even have “some sections with cable TV” in their description – I guess you can “rough it” and watch The Backyardigans, too?
Over 100 full service campsites along Oak Hollow Lake, featuring modern bathhouse, showers, play area, pool, some sections with cable TV.
3415 N. Centennial Street
336.883.3492

Do you have kids that are nature and animal lovers? Then you’ll want to check out the Piedmont Environmental Center. They have classes, camps, walking trails (on over 376 acres that have been preserved and protected) and more activities going on throughout the summer. I called and spoke to the Director, Dick Thomas, and he told me that they have been holding their summer camps since 1975 and shared that they have some of the best (if not THE best) camps in the state. The membership costs are fairly low and give a big discount to their programs and camps. There is NO FEE to walk through their building, which is made of 60% recycled materials, or to walk the trails and explore.
Center Open: Monday - Friday 9-5.
Building closed Sat. & Sun. but trails remain open.
1220 Penny Road
336.883.8531

All-A-Flutter Butterfly Farm is a cool place where kids learn about all of the stages of the butterfly’s life cycle. Girls AND Boys of all ages will be in awe of how they change from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. The farm gives them the opportunity to have the butterfly placed on their hands or clothing and then they fly away, the butterflies not the kids! The program is interactive and fun for kids of all ages! You can read Katie's Day Trip Blog about All-A-Flutter by clicking here.

Open April through October 9th for Family Days on Saturdays from 10-11am and 3-4pm and Sundays from 2-3pm (just show up about 10 minutes early). Admission fee is $6 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors 65+. If it’s raining at 8am you’ll want to call before heading over there. There are times available during the week, but are for groups only.
7850 Clinard Farms Road
336.454.5651

Thank you for these fun ideas, Alison! I also have to throw in the fact that High Point has some great shopping, so if your children can hang for some extra "mommy-time" I highly suggest checking out some local businesses including Poshh Boutique (You can get 20% off any one item by mentioning Smarty Pants!), The Gilded Lily by Patra, Kits Company, and Hang-Ups. There are also some fabulous places to shop for furniture (of course!) and fabric. We have quite a few listed on our Best Kept Secrets blog for great deals in the High Point area. You can also check out our blog on the High Point Museum here. We would love for you to share more of your favorite spots below!

Live on Fox 8 News: Summer Must-Haves!

By Rachel H

If you are logging on prior to 9am this morning, flip on Fox 8 News and you might catch Katie, Rachel and Allison from the TSP Team LIVE as we show this summer's must have items! And if you are visiting our site for the first time after seeing us on the news - welcome! We'd love for you to surf around the site for a while and sign up to receive our free weekly newsletter!

Below are the items we talked about on our segments today. (You may also catch a blurb of the segments by visiting http://www.myfox8.com/.) We have gathered items that some of us have used for years, as well as new items that have just come out! Feel free to email us at triadsmartypants@gmail.com with any questions, or post a comment at the end of our blog if you have a "must have" item to add!

Summer Must-Haves for Traveling with Children

~ Lap Desk - We found this cute version atPaper Sassy. There are also cool prints for boys, too. It can also be personalized and will keep kids happy with books, art, cards, you name it!

Brain Quest Games - We've blogged about these many times before! They are educational, but fun for kids and will pass the time on long trips as well. You can find great deals on these at Costco.

~ Portable DVD Player - We all agree that a DVD player should not be used consistently in the car, only on long trips. Even then, we think you should just use it for a portion of the time. Play videos at night when the children can't see much else anyway, or put on a video after you want things to start calming down in the car after your many games of "I spy" or "I'm going on a picnic!" If you do not have a DVD player installed, the RCA dual screen is one that we have found to be great. Two screens secure on to the back of seats with Velcro and have earphones as well. Children do not have to watch the same movie with this version.

~ "No fail" DVD's - depending on the age of your children, of course their taste in movies will vary, but we showed some of our children's favorites this morning. Video ideas begin at age two and go through age eight: Leapfrog Letter Factory, Leapfrog Math Circus, Leapfrog Word Factory, Annie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Home Alone, Charlotte's Web, The Princess & the Frog, Spirit, Alivin & The Chipmunks The Squeakquel, Hotel for Dogs, G-Force, and Up.

~ Travel Tic Tac Toe - We thought this was cute for kids OR adults! Easy game for all ages to comprehend. We found this travel version at Evy's Gifts.

~ Illumineyes Reading Glasses - This was another great find at Evy's Gifts. These look funny once you get them on, but they work so well! Once it gets dark, no one has to give up reading when you have these! They have two little lights on the sides of these glasses so that you can read while you travel at night!

Summer "Must-Have" Fashions for Women

Moe and Jamie, from Poshh Boutique in High Point, educated us all on the fashion finds for this summer! All of the items shown on the news segment, as well as those shown below, can be found at Poshh boutique, 5870-105 Samet Drive at The Palladium Commons in High Point. (next to McAlisters and Donato's) Phone-336-841-2009

Black Cocktail Dress
This classy "Cluce" black couture layered dress with a sexy cutout back, is sure to be a show stopper, pair this dress with some sexy strappy heels and chandelier earrings to complete your semi-formal look.

Floral Off Shoulder Dress
Hot Must have for this Summer! Floral is "in" and the off shoulder look is totally IN!! With this cute little number you can accomplish two great looks; pair with some diva sandals for a dressy look, or wear some killer flats for a more casual look!

Yellow Silk Romper
Yes ladies Rompers are BACK!!! Venture out and try a new look with this yellow romper. Definitely not the momiformKatie blogged about!

Black Lace Back Romper
This sexy black, lace back romper is Haute!!!! This would be a great look for a date night or Girls Night Out on the town ... sexy yet comfy!!

Necklace
Be transparent ... statement jewelry is surely in and this clear crystal necklace definitely makes a statement!

Summer "Must-Haves" for the Beach

~ Backpack Beach Chair - Lugging everything to the beach with kids is always a hassle. Make it a little easier with one of these! Wear your beach chair like a backpack! One of our favorites for style and comfort is the RIO. You can find beach chairs similar to these at Costco, Sams, Kmart and Wal-Mart.

~ Mini baby pool - of course these are great for the backyard, but we have also found that these are perfect for beach trips as well! They keep little ones occupied who may not be comfortable in the ocean or on the sand.

~ We thought these monogrammed beach towels were so cute! They are soft as can be, and are also the perfect size to keep you warm after a dip in the ocean, or spread out on the beach for some sun-bathing. These towels can be found at Evy's Gifts in Kernersville or Greensboro.

~ Sunscreens - We contacted Alan B. Fleischer, Jr., M.D. Professor and Chair of Dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine to ask the all important question about sunscreens. Dr. Fleischer told us, "There are no differences between adult sunscreens and children sunscreens, except in the color of the bottle. This is a pure marketing difference that the manufacturers use to expand their market. I suggest that parents choose an SPF 50 or higher product, preferably very water resistant or "sport", and use these products every day. No individual brand is better than another. The key to effective use is to:
1. Use a lot
2. Use it 15-30 minutes before any water exposure
3. Use it everyday
Also, don't forget about hats and clothing or swimshirts." We also asked him about spray vs. lotions and he said it is pretty much a matter of consumer preference.

~ BUILT NY - this brand has awesome products, but one of our favorites is this water bottle coozie. It keeps your water bottle even colder and keeps the ice in solid form even when you are out on the beach. It is also great because it can hang from your beach chair. You can find these on www.amazon.com.

Summer "Must-Haves" for the Pool

~California Baby Bug Spray - found at local drugstores and Target - safe, natural, and fun!

~ ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent - This works wonders by the pool, in the backyard, or camping. This ThermaCELL device dispenses a small amount of repellent into the air over a long period of time. It is powered by a butane cartridge and is cordless. (batteries are not needed) A mat saturated with Allethrin, a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, creating a 15 x 15 ft (225 sq ft) “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in minutes. The repellent is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, but when used as directed, will not harm humans or pets. You simply replace the small mat for your next use.

~ New Balance Sandals for kids - We thought these were adorable, functional, and just too smarty! These sandals are available in blue or pink and are perfect for this summer. They are available in infants sizes 7-10 and kids sizes 11-3, whole sizes only. You can find them at New Balance Winston-Salem (located at Thruway Center) and can receive 15% - 30% off by using your Smarty Pants/New Balance Kids Club card (ask for this at the front desk)! 336.722.9559

~ Flip-flop wine glass coasters - These are not only a must-have for yourself when throwing a beach or pool party, but they are a great gift, too! We found these at Evy's Gifts. They have two locations in the Triad - Main Street Kernersville or Battleground in Greensboro.

~ Reusable Swim Diapers - read more about these in our blog here! We have found these at very affordable prices at Babies R Us and Target. Buying a few of these at $6-$10 each is much more cost effective then buying pack after pack of disposable diapers. Plus, you are helping the environment!

~ Puddle Jumper Life Jacket - Found at Target - Just arm floaties alone don't always work well for younger children. We also know that a regular life jacket can help keep your child afloat, but often rotates them in the water so that their face may be submerged or their head thrown back so that they are not upright. This Puddle Jumper life jacket puts two in one and gives children security in the water as they learn to swim. *Parents should still remain close-by, as this is not a life saving device.

~ Picnic Baskets and Coolers - surely you have spotted these adorable picnic baskets by now. We found ours for a bargain at the Buckhead Betties sale, but if you missed it, you can find baskets similar to these at many local gift shops in the Triad including Kim Taylor & Co, and Hip Chics! You can also order one online at GoosiePie Monograms. Baskets can be insulated and some even come with a lid. A new mini version has also been recently distributed to local stores. If you know of other places who sell these, leave us a comment below.

~ The Ultimate Beach bag - Read our blog here! We can't say enough about how much we have loved this bag.

~ Orthaheel Flip-Flops - We found these at Fleet Feet Sports in Winston-Salem. There are variations of this flop for men and women and all are so stylish! But even better than looking good, these flip-flops serve a purpose - "Orthaheel orthotic design helps "reclaim" your natural footprint by restoring the foot's natural (neutral) alignment, enabling the feet, ankles and legs to function as efficiently and dynamically as they were intended."

~ Dry Shampoo - I wrote about this in my Random Show and Tell post. It is great for the pool so your hair does not get the greasy look!

~ The Spooneez Sackpack - You know how we love our Spooneez! Well, we are the first to debut this new item called the Spooneez sackpack! It is so stylish and cute! We thought this was the perfect bag for swim team practice and trips to the pool. It is machine washable, made int he USA, and eco-friendly! These will be available mid-June on the website or at O Baby Organics in Winston-Salem.

Have anything to share on the items above? Did we miss a great "must-have" that you think should be featured? Leave us a comment below!

Bonus Giveaway: Everyone Wins!!!!!!!!!!!

By Katie M

Yes, that’s right. Thanks to Send Out Cards and its offer to Triad Smarty Pants readers, everyone gets to be a winner with this latest giveaway. And with Mother’s Day just around the corner, the timing couldn’t be more perfect.

If you haven’t heard about Send Out Cards.com then take note. This site is somewhat like Netflix for Hallmark junkies. It’s an online store that houses thousands of greeting cards that you can select, customize and send for pennies. However, if you choose to participate in this giveaway, you will have the chance to send 10 FREE cards to friends and family over the next month. That equates to more than $50 in savings. All you need to do is log on to http://www.sendoutcards.com/CoachG and you’ll be immediately registered to begin.

Who doesn’t love staying in touch with friends and family? But who wants to spend close to $5 on a card plus postage - plus drive to a card shop, spend several minutes searching for the perfect card, and then physically mailing it? It’s a gesture that requires several steps. The beauty of the Send Out Cards system is that it simplifies the greeting card process. No stores, lines, no looking for stamps, no post office delivery, and no over-priced cards. What you gain is more time, less expensive cards, more creativity, and more time. You can’t beat that!

Send Out Cards has more than 15,000 greeting card options plus templates for you to create your own card. All you need to do is type in your greeting and hit send. Within a matter of days, your recipient will receive your letter in his or her mailbox!

“In this high-tech world where we are flooded with emails and text messages, we have quickly forgotten the impact of how someone feels when they receive a personalized note in the mail. That, of course, is the high-touch aspect of Send Out Cards, a real life greeting card arriving in the mail,” says Greg Giordano, Triad representative of Send Out Cards.

After going through the process myself (which took just a few minutes), I wanted to give you all a couple of smarty tips:

1. When you first log on to the site, you’ll see a rectangular box at the top of the site with a cute picture of Greg and his family. In that box is a button that says “Send Card.” Click that box to start.
2. Next, you’ll be asked to fill out a form to set up your free account. Please know that your information will not be shared with anyone else and your email will not be added to any Send Out Cards mailing list. You will, however, receive an email from Greg thanking you for your participation and asking if you have any questions.
3. After you fill out your information and click to continue, look for the bald guy in the black jacket at the bottom of your screen. He is actually the CEO of Send Out Cards :) And he can walk you through the entire process. I followed his instructions and it made the process a cinch.
4. If you decide to customize your card with a photo, it may take you a little longer than a few minutes if you are not super savvy with technology. But the process overall is still simple.
5. You do not need any type of promo code to get started. Once you fill out your account form, Greg can then track your account.

So, go ahead and sign up for your free account and start using Send Out Cards! And after you go through the process, let us know what you think!
