Smarty Day Trip Series: Great Wolf Lodge

By Rachel H and Guest Blogger Kathie Harper

First of all, I guess I need to preface that Great Wolf Lodge is not really a one day trip. It is a one night trip, which includes two days of fun at the waterpark! In other words, when you purchase a night at the lodge, your family gets waterpark passes for most of the day prior to and the entire day after your night's stay.

My family visited the Great Wolf Lodge in April, and our guest blogger, Kathie, took her family last year. The children's ages who went were 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4. All can swim fairly well, but it was not a problem finding things to do! Kathie's account of her trip, along with a few photos and information from Rachel is included below.

Great Wolf Lodge is located in Concord, NC, which is an hour's drive from Winston, a little less from High Point, and a little more from Greensboro. We arrived at 1:00 on a Monday. Even if your room is not ready, you can check in at 1:00 and start the waterpark. You can then get into your room at 3:00. We were able to get right in our room and we were at the waterpark by 1:30. The price of your room includes lodging and the waterpark - from 1:00pm the day you check in and the next day until it closes. You may have to pay a little extra if there are more people in the room than allotted, but it is still a great deal. The basic family suite has 2 queen beds, a pull out sofa bed, a small refrigerator, a microwave and cable tv. This is for 4 people and ranges from $190 during the week to $270 on a weekend. Remember - this is lodging and one and a half days at a waterpark. In my mind, a pretty good deal.

The waterpark is in a huge room, heated, with heated water and great changing rooms. They provide the towels. They are not huge but you can get as many as you would like and they are very warm. The lifeguards measure the children as you go in to see what rides they can go on. There are lifeguards everywhere. They are always moving, always watching and they change stations a lot. I felt that it was very safe and very clean.

There are 4 waterslides:

Howlin' Tornado - must be at least 48". Sorry, I did not go on this because I do not do well if there is a lot of spinning. I did ask around and it was by far, the favorite ride!

River Canyon Run - must be at least 42" to ride; 42" - 48" must ride with an adult. This is great! It is four to a raft and you sit down. It does not spin you, but rocks side to side. My eight year old and I spent a lot of time on this one!

Alberta Falls - must be at least 42" to ride; 42" - 48" must ride with an adult. This is great! You sit in single or double tubes and go down. Also, a favorite with my eight and seven year olds.

Mountain Edge Raceway - must be at least 42". You lay face down on a mat and race 3 other people. It is great! My seven year old especially liked this one!

Other than the water slides, there are: (these are the ones the four and five year olds liked)

1) Beaver Tail Lake - a fantastic wave pool that is calm and then makes waves about every 10 minutes. This was loved by all my kids. You can swim or float in single or double rafts.

2) Cub Paw Pool - for little kids under 48". Older children can take in younger children. This is an enclosed water pool with great spray and play items. There is a maximum depth of one foot, so it is very safe.

3) Fort Mackenzie - a four story treehouse that sprays you as you walk around. It has two water slides which are great for children who are not skilled swimmers or who may be a little hesitant to ride the larger slides.

4) A deep water (up to 5 feet) pool with basketball and ropes/lily pad courses. It is great fun to swim around.

We stayed in the waterpark five hours the first day. We did take a break and get Edy's ice cream. The Edy's Lil Scoop was huge and more than enough for a hungry child or adult. It was a blast and we were already excited about going again the next day.

We went to the room, changed into dry clothes and headed out for dinner. There are two restaurants in the lodge - a buffet and a sit down. Because we were there on a Monday night, only the buffet was open. It was very good and reasonably priced. There are also numerous restaurants within a mile of the lodge if you want to get out for a while.

After dinner, the kids changed into pajamas for the Clock Tower show and story time. The younger children enjoyed this a lot!

There are many other activities at the Great Wolf - a spa, an arcade, MagiQuest which is a quest where you use high tech wand to solve challenges. As you might think, these can really add up if you decide to do all these extras. We just played in the water park and never ran out of things to do.

The second day, we were in the water at 10:00 when it opened. We had to check out of our room at 11:00 so I brought a bag of dry clothes for everyone to change into at the end of the day. You can also rent lockers for $10. We played until 3:30 with a short break for lunch. We ate at the walk-up restaurant inside the waterpark. Again, I thought the prices were reasonable - $4 hamburgers, $3.50 hotdogs, $6 chicken fingers and fries. They also have Pizza Hut and Dunkin Donuts on the property.

They also have a very nice gift shop and a swim shop. I had forgotten goggles and was able to purchase very good Speedo Jr.'s at the Great Wolf. Again, the prices were about what I would have paid at Target.

When we were finished swimming, we used the family changing room and all took showers. We were clean, and dry and tired. It was only a short drive back to our house but it had seemed like we had been on vacation a long way from home. It was fantastic!

Someone asked my eight year old if her family should go for one or two nights. My 8 year old said "definitely, one is enough". If you take advantage of the waterpark, which is what you are paying for, you will be exhausted!

Quick stats/info:
The indoor waterpark is typically open from 9am to 8pm daily
What to bring:
Swimsuit/Cover-Up
Plastic bag to carry wet suits home
Other than the essentials above, not much is needed, but some optional items could be:
Swim goggles, Earplugs, Flip flops, Aqua socks
Waterproof watch
Exercise clothing
Reading materials
Warm PJ’s/Slippers to wear to Story Time
If you’re not swimming, you may still wish to bring comfortable clothing for the 84-degree waterpark area.

Smarty Tips for Getting Good Indoor Air Quality

By Dana D, Charlotte Smarty Pants

We do so many things to nurture our children and families but one thing we often overlook is indoor air quality. Our homes are becoming so much more energy efficient which is great. The negative aspect is that all the pollutants we bring into the home are causing indoor air pollution to become worse than outdoor air pollution. We have sealed up all those drafty areas and/or put in new windows but now we have stale polluted air inside. So I have pulled together a few tips to help you out this winter. Once spring arrives then we can open our windows and let some fresh air in.

Use low or no VOC paint when painting and try to ventilate as much as possible. If you can hold off and paint in the spring that would be a better scenario.

AFM Safecoat and Mythic Paint are two great examples. Most paint lines now have their version of this type of paint so it should be no problem finding it.

Buy used furniture. It has had time to off gas. You can always put a fresh coat of the low or no VOC paint on it for a new look. If you are going to buy new then buy eco friendly versions, such as flame retardant free, organic upholstery and/or made of recycled materials. You also want to buy pieces with a nontoxic finish and NO particle board. All the pieces of wood are sandwiched together with glue which off gases as well. Check out Pacific Rim Woodworking for great quality eco-friendly furniture. Examples of furniture companies that do not use flame retardants are Green Sage Furniture, Montauk Furniture and Verellen Home Collection. IKEA has some affordable options as well.

Remember to change air filters and replace with a tighter weave if needed.

Buy all natural or wool rugs (Earth Weave brand for example) or try to eliminate rugs. Synthetic rugs also have issues in regards to air quality and carpet can contribute to allergies as well.

Try to keep dust and pet dander under control.

Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter.

Use natural cleaning products.

One of the easiest things to do is buy houseplants. It is wise to put a couple in your bedroom since you spend a majority of your lifetime in this one room. Houseplants help purify the air. It’s a good idea to keep one on your desk at work as well.

Here is a list of plants that are most effective.
- Peace lily
- Gerbera daisy
- Chinese evergreen
- Bamboo or reed palm
- Pot mum
- Corn plant
- Golden pothos
- English ivy
- Warnecki
- Janet craig
- Marginata

Purchase an air purifier.

I run the attic fan occasionally, but not for long, to get fresh air circulating in the house. It will obviously cool the house down which is backfiring on the whole idea of being energy efficient while heating the home.

Remember to get outside as much as possible and ask your local plant nursery on how to best care for houseplants. My houseplants have been severely neglected so I need ones that require little maintenance.

Good luck!

Smarty Mom: Melanie York

By Katie M

Smarties, it's my pleasure to introduce you to Melanie York. Melanie grew up in Winston-Salem, and moved back here four years ago with her family. She and her husband, Matt, have a beautiful six-year-old daughter, Mary Poyner. Melanie is a stay-at-home mom who works part-time at her husband's law firm. And when she can, Melanie stays active in a number of volunteer organizations, and also enjoys playing tennis, meeting with her book club, exercising, cooking and photography.

Melanie comes highly recommended as a smarty mom by another loyal reader who says "Melanie always knows where to go, what is going on, and always seems to have it all together."

So, let's see what this Smarty Mom has to say!

You are active in a lot of local organizations. Tell us about these groups and what you do for them.
I am a member of Charity Chicks where I volunteer at the Community Care Clinic in their pharmacy, and I also help out with some photography for their newsletter. At Centenary United Methodist Church, I teach Sunday school and am a co-leader of its women's Circle. I also volunteer my time with the Junior League of Winston-Salem and with the PTA at Sherwood Forest Elementary School. Additionally, I maintain a 15-year friendship/mentoring relationship with my "little sister" who I met through Big Brothers/Big Sisters. She is now in her mid-twenties and a college graduate!

That is so impressive that you're a "big sister"! Tell us more about that and how you got involved.
I volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters when I was first married and out of college. I was matched with LaKara, who was 10 years-old at the time. She is the oldest of five and at the time, an extremely sweet, but painfully shy girl. She loved school and reading, and the first time we met at her house to play, she said she planned to go to college (she would be the first in her family to do so).

Her mother was young and single. It was hard at first to get her to come out of her shell, but over time she did. We would go to the library almost every time I visited, then out to lunch or ice cream. I would also take her to museums, the farmer’s market, and just do things at my house. She just wanted to hang-out and didn’t mind what we did. I worked at a college at the time, and would take her to events there as well. The hardest part was taking her home and seeing that she was sad our day had to end.

We saw each other every week for almost two years, and then we moved back to North Carolina. We stayed in touch by phone and letters. I went back to visit her every year until a few years ago when it became harder after we started our own family. A year after I left, her mother died unexpectedly at the age of 30 and left behind LaKara and her four younger siblings. Fortunately, her grandparents lived in town and could take three of them in. The two boys went to live with an aunt down the street from the grandparents. LaKara was a young teenager by then. She took on the role of mother to her siblings and went on to the University of Kentucky where she studied psychology and graduated in 4 ½ years! She navigated the whole college process mostly herself, and with help from me and school counselors.

She still helps care for her siblings, is working and considering graduate school. She is a caring, confident and remarkable 25 year-old woman. It continues to be a wonderful experience to be her friend and her mentor.

Wow, what an amazing story! Thanks so much for sharing!

I also hear you are a member of two USTA tennis teams. How cool. How does one become a member?

I played tennis since I was child and played through high school. I started playing again for fun after I graduated from college and joined a USTA league in the town where we were living. Anyone can join and we have a local coordinator that can help those interested finding a team. The teams play either during the day or at night. Winston-Salem is a great tennis town! There are so many public courts to play on and wonderful pros in the area. Melissa Robertson is our local coordinator: tennisliss@triad.rr.com

So what are some things your book club is reading, and what are some of your favorite books?
My book club recently decided to reread a classic, The Great Gatsby. Normally, we are reading things that are currently popular in fiction or non-fiction. My favorite book this year has been Crazy for the Storm and The Help. I also love a book that makes me laugh— Funny in Farsi; A Memoir of Growing Up Iranian in America by Firoozeh Dumas, We’re Just Like You, Only Prettier by Celia Rivenbark, and Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris.

Where is your favorite place to shop for children's clothes?
I like to shop Gazoodles sales, Target and Old Navy. If I am going to splurge on kids clothes, I love Gazoodles.

What about for you?
For women’s clothes and jeans, I love to go to Fashionista at Nitsa’s to buy pieces that make up the basics in my wardrobe that I want to stand the test of time. Then I fill in with Bannana Republic. I am not a big shopper so it doesn’t happen much!

What are some of your favorite gift shops?
I adore All Through the House in Reynolda Village. They have gifts in a wide range of price points and wrap everything beautifully.

What is something your family loves to do?
One of our favorite family activities is to take a picnic or just hang out in Reynolda Gardens. My daughter loves to play in the big magnolia trees or explore the garden. We also like to hang out at parks/playgrounds near by and bring our golden retriever with us.

Where is your favorite place to go eat with the family?
On the weekends is Dioli’s and get a fresh mozzarella sandwich on their homemade foccia. Even my six-year old loves it! We also like Simply Yummy for the menu and we can bring our dog with us on the patio. For dinner, we like Vincenzo’s. We love Italian and my daughter thinks it’s “very fancy!”

Favorite date place?
Our favorite date place(s) is first attending a Kicked Back Classics concert by the Winston-Salem Symphony then dinner at Mozelle’s. The Kicked Back series is an abbreviated and more casual version of the regular symphony with no intermission. Maestro Robert Moody is wonderful at making it fun. Then it ends by 9 and we go to dinner. We adore Mozelle’s ever-changing menu and exceptional service. If it’s a warm evening, sitting outside and people watching is the best.

What's your favorite "mommy-time" activity?
I have lots of favorite “mommy times” — a night out with girls, playing tennis, taking a long walk with a friend or going to my favorite gym class with a friend.

Favorite place for a mani/pedi?
Dejavu

Smartiest way you stay organized?
Keeping down on clutter. I keep a basket for toys/items that are ready to be given to charity. Then every six months or so I sort it and donate it. I am trying to teach my daughter to do the same with her toys, especially before her birthday or Christmas. Then we try to find a place for every toy, and my daughter makes a label with a post-it so it makes clean up in the evenings easier for her.

Funniest thing your daughter ever said?
I was getting her ready for bed the other night and she kept playing, talking and not focusing on the tasks at hand. When she finally got to bed, I told her what the consequence would be for the delay. She pleaded with me, “My brain doesn’t work like your brain! I can’t stop thinking about what I want to play or talk about!”

Mini van or SUV?
SUV

What's the best "mom secret" your mom ever shared with you?
That children are paying attention and remember and understand way more than you think!

Favorite park?
Tanglewood

Best thing about raising a family in the Triad?
The best thing about raising a family in the Triad is how easy it is to do so many things—going to the Reynolda House Museum, fun events at the Children’s Museum, attending the Children’s Theater on Saturday mornings, free concerts downtown in the summer.

Best kept secret in the Triad?
Mooney’s Café on 4th street for their middle eastern food. It’s great for take-out as well, especially if you’re having people over. I am hoping they will bring back their Baklava ice cream this summer—over the top delicious! Also, the farmer’s market in Krankie’s parking lot on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Amazing local produce!

How did you hear about Triad Smarty Pants?
From other moms I knew who had been profiled as Smarty Moms.

I could not live without...my little leather index card holder I keep in my purse to write lists. I have had it for 15 plus years!

I wish someone had told me sooner about...Krankies coffee downtown. Their coffee and baked goods are amazing! I love their cheddar and chive scone, and decaf coffee with chocolate.

Thanks for all your smarty answers today, Melanie! You were a fun interview!

Do you have someone in mind you'd like to see profiled as a Smarty Mom or Dad? Email us at triadsmartypants@gmail.com and put us in touch!

Smarty Sponsor: The Club at Oak Branch

By Guest Blogger, Karen H

It's that time of the year again...Schools out and Summer is in!!!! What will your family be doing to cool off? Hit the WATER! Kids love it at any age, whether it’s the sprinkler in your yard, your neighborhood swimming pool, or a trip to the lake or beach. As a parent, you want to be sure that in addition to your kids having a great time, they have the skills to be safe around water. Why not help give your child the life long skills for water safety with swim lessons? They don’t have to become the next Michael Phelps, but at a minimum you want to teach your child how to be safe when in or around water.

The best swim lessons for kids focus on giving your child positive learning experiences in the water. The Club at Oak Branch offers nurturing, positive and encouraging swim lessons for infants as young as three months through the teenage years! Whether you’re interested in learning proper form and technique or you’re looking for that extra edge for competitive swimming, This is the place for swim instruction! Plus, if you mention Triad Smarty Pants when you call, you'll get 10% off any Summer Camp or Swim Session!!!!

Swim lessons at The Club emphasize your child’s individual needs and skill level. They offer small class sizes and qualified experienced staff who encourage a whole life approach to swim lessons. Not only will your child learn proper form, your child will gain confidence, self-esteem and an inner sense of accomplishment as they learn new skills and progress through their lessons. They also encourage their swimmers to participate in new challenges beyond their lessons with events like our “Fun Swim Meet" and “Youth Triathlon”. These events emphasize personal best and the thrill of accomplishment in an enjoyable non-threatening environment. Kids love to learn that, yes - they can do it!

This is a great testimonial from a parent whose child took lessons at The Club:
"My son has taken swimming classes at The Club at Oak Branch for more than seven years. He started as a baby and now swims all four strokes very well at the swim team level. The Aquatics Director, Maria Gonzalez, is very approachable and always accommodating. She strives to be certain every student is completely satisfied with their swimming education and experience. The Club at Oak Branch has the nicest pool in Greensboro! My son loves the slides, basketball goal, underwater music, and Jacuzzi. I enjoy being able to watch him swim while I exercise upstairs. Most importantly, my son has always enjoyed his swimming classes at here. As a result, he has developed a love for swimming and genuinely looks forward to each class. Swimming is a wonderful life skill and The Club at Oak Branch is a great place for kids to learn to swim."

For parents who are looking for suggestions on helping their children enjoy water and become swimmers, the easiest way is to start from the beginning! As infants, make bath time a relaxed and fun time for your baby. Gently sprinkle water on your little one’s face, play games and sing songs to make bath time a pleasant experience. Get in the tub or shower with baby! Your infant will pick up on your cues that this is a safe, fun and welcoming environment, a warm and nurturing time to enjoy. Repetition of making bath time, and later on swim time, a fun positive place to be, encourages your child to enjoy the water.

As your child grows into toddlerhood, they realize that separation anxiety is a normal developmental stage for your child to go through. One of life’s great lessons for kids (and adults!) to learn, is that yes, it’s okay to be un-certain of new things, but if you just TRY, you learn you CAN do it, and WOW! The boost to self esteem and sense of independence your child achieves from that is huge! You can help them with this stage by maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude that they are going to have a great time and learn amazing things in their swim class, and they can show you all about it! Make bath and swim time a place for special toys (squirt toys, floating toys, balls, etc), give Spiderman or that special baby doll water time too! If your child is fearful, try to pinpoint what is their specific worry. Sometimes it’s as simple as a pair of goggles to protect eyes or a warm coverup for when class is over. You are your child’s best role model. Be patient, be encouraging, be positive. Remember it can be hard to learn new things, but what an adventure when you do!

In addition to The Club’s swim sessions, we also offer several Summer Camp options:

-Full Day Camp (for kids 5-12 yrs old) or a Half-Day Camp
option for 2 1/2 to 5 year olds.
-Weekly themed camps—pick your favorites-Pirates, Legos, Mad Scientists and more!
-We also offer Sports Specific Camps and Swim Camps!

All camp options include daily swim lessons!!! Your child is sure to love the summer time while at The Club at Oak Branch!

*Remember, mention Triad Smarty Pants when you call and get 10% off any Summer Camp or Swim Session!!!!

Do I Play With My Kids Enough?

By Katie M

I will never forget the words one mom said to me when my first born was just six months old. She told me she was “too busy to play with her kids.” At the time she was a stay-at-home mom and her children were in elementary school full-time. She did not have any work or volunteer obligations. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure she also had a hired maid, a husband who helped with dinner preparations and a laundry list of babysitters she used non-stop. All that, but she was still too busy, she said.

As a new mom, those words hit me like a ton of bricks. I remember being so angry and thinking (and later wished I had said), “Why did you even bother to have children?” Who knows – maybe she was exaggerating or didn’t realize what she was saying. Regardless, those words from her still haunt me. And after six years of being a mom, I am still trying to put those words into perspective.

So now my children are ages six and three. I have one in elementary school full-time, and one in preschool several days a week. I think I’m pretty busy. Besides this little thing called Triad Smarty Pants, I also work on occasional freelance jobs. I clean my house, do the laundry, prepare dinner most nights of the week, manage the grocery runs, care for my kids, blah, blah, blah.

I know, I know. You all do this too – plus a lot more! I’m not saying my situation is unique at all. We are all busy moms – whether we work or not. I get that. But despite the 8 to 13 waking hours I have with my children every day, I still worry I am not playing with them enough.

Being a mom and a wife is my first job (everything else comes second). And so lots of times that means I need to empty the dishwasher instead of color or paint. Or, vacuum the house instead of play in the yard. Or, change the laundry or start dinner – instead of play another round of I Spy.

I know it’s important to stay on top of all those things around the house, but I also know it’s equally important to live in the moment and not sweat the other stuff. The house will get clean, we’ll find something to eat for dinner (even if it’s just grilled cheese sandwiches), and chances are good we have a few clean outfits left at the back of our closets.

Added to this mommy guilt is the constant plea from my kids, “Play with me, play with me, play with me.” It makes me feel as if I never do, even though I know that’s not true.

Yet as much as I want to spend more hours playing, I also get easily burnt out. So, on the opposite spectrum, I have a confession to make. In the words of Rachel's four-year-old daughter, “I would rather stick pins in my eyeballs” then dress up Barbie for hours on end or search for earthworms and spiders. I’m all about getting down and dirty with the kids, but I’m also all for fostering independent play. I mean, really - there is a reason we bought this house with a dedicated playroom and fenced-in backyard, right? :)

So when I’ve had enough of play and pretend, I go back to the same daily chores of cleaning, laundry and cooking while they continue to play (or not)…and then the predictable pleas of “play with me” continue...along with the unending cycle of mommy guilt..and it goes on, and on, and on...

As I go back and forth on this topic – and strive every day to NOT be the mom who says “I’m too busy to play with my kids” – I wonder if you all share this same struggle? Do you worry you aren’t playing with your kids enough? And as much as you want to play more, do you admit you get easily burnt out too? Where is the happy balance for you?

Once Upon A Mattress
Thursday, June 17, 2010, 8pm
Fitzpatrick Auditorium
Kernersville Elementary School
If you thought you knew the story of "The Princess and The Pea," you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

Live on Fox 8 News: Summer Must-Haves!

By Rachel H

If you are logging on prior to 9am this morning, flip on Fox 8 News and you might catch Katie, Rachel and Allison from the TSP Team LIVE as we show this summer's must have items! And if you are visiting our site for the first time after seeing us on the news - welcome! We'd love for you to surf around the site for a while and sign up to receive our free weekly newsletter!

Below are the items we talked about on our segments today. (You may also catch a blurb of the segments by visiting http://www.myfox8.com/.) We have gathered items that some of us have used for years, as well as new items that have just come out! Feel free to email us at triadsmartypants@gmail.com with any questions, or post a comment at the end of our blog if you have a "must have" item to add!

Summer Must-Haves for Traveling with Children

~ Lap Desk - We found this cute version atPaper Sassy. There are also cool prints for boys, too. It can also be personalized and will keep kids happy with books, art, cards, you name it!

Brain Quest Games - We've blogged about these many times before! They are educational, but fun for kids and will pass the time on long trips as well. You can find great deals on these at Costco.

~ Portable DVD Player - We all agree that a DVD player should not be used consistently in the car, only on long trips. Even then, we think you should just use it for a portion of the time. Play videos at night when the children can't see much else anyway, or put on a video after you want things to start calming down in the car after your many games of "I spy" or "I'm going on a picnic!" If you do not have a DVD player installed, the RCA dual screen is one that we have found to be great. Two screens secure on to the back of seats with Velcro and have earphones as well. Children do not have to watch the same movie with this version.

~ "No fail" DVD's - depending on the age of your children, of course their taste in movies will vary, but we showed some of our children's favorites this morning. Video ideas begin at age two and go through age eight: Leapfrog Letter Factory, Leapfrog Math Circus, Leapfrog Word Factory, Annie, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Home Alone, Charlotte's Web, The Princess & the Frog, Spirit, Alivin & The Chipmunks The Squeakquel, Hotel for Dogs, G-Force, and Up.

~ Travel Tic Tac Toe - We thought this was cute for kids OR adults! Easy game for all ages to comprehend. We found this travel version at Evy's Gifts.

~ Illumineyes Reading Glasses - This was another great find at Evy's Gifts. These look funny once you get them on, but they work so well! Once it gets dark, no one has to give up reading when you have these! They have two little lights on the sides of these glasses so that you can read while you travel at night!

Summer "Must-Have" Fashions for Women

Moe and Jamie, from Poshh Boutique in High Point, educated us all on the fashion finds for this summer! All of the items shown on the news segment, as well as those shown below, can be found at Poshh boutique, 5870-105 Samet Drive at The Palladium Commons in High Point. (next to McAlisters and Donato's) Phone-336-841-2009

Black Cocktail Dress
This classy "Cluce" black couture layered dress with a sexy cutout back, is sure to be a show stopper, pair this dress with some sexy strappy heels and chandelier earrings to complete your semi-formal look.

Floral Off Shoulder Dress
Hot Must have for this Summer! Floral is "in" and the off shoulder look is totally IN!! With this cute little number you can accomplish two great looks; pair with some diva sandals for a dressy look, or wear some killer flats for a more casual look!

Yellow Silk Romper
Yes ladies Rompers are BACK!!! Venture out and try a new look with this yellow romper. Definitely not the momiformKatie blogged about!

Black Lace Back Romper
This sexy black, lace back romper is Haute!!!! This would be a great look for a date night or Girls Night Out on the town ... sexy yet comfy!!

Necklace
Be transparent ... statement jewelry is surely in and this clear crystal necklace definitely makes a statement!

Summer "Must-Haves" for the Beach

~ Backpack Beach Chair - Lugging everything to the beach with kids is always a hassle. Make it a little easier with one of these! Wear your beach chair like a backpack! One of our favorites for style and comfort is the RIO. You can find beach chairs similar to these at Costco, Sams, Kmart and Wal-Mart.

~ Mini baby pool - of course these are great for the backyard, but we have also found that these are perfect for beach trips as well! They keep little ones occupied who may not be comfortable in the ocean or on the sand.

~ We thought these monogrammed beach towels were so cute! They are soft as can be, and are also the perfect size to keep you warm after a dip in the ocean, or spread out on the beach for some sun-bathing. These towels can be found at Evy's Gifts in Kernersville or Greensboro.

~ Sunscreens - We contacted Alan B. Fleischer, Jr., M.D. Professor and Chair of Dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine to ask the all important question about sunscreens. Dr. Fleischer told us, "There are no differences between adult sunscreens and children sunscreens, except in the color of the bottle. This is a pure marketing difference that the manufacturers use to expand their market. I suggest that parents choose an SPF 50 or higher product, preferably very water resistant or "sport", and use these products every day. No individual brand is better than another. The key to effective use is to:
1. Use a lot
2. Use it 15-30 minutes before any water exposure
3. Use it everyday
Also, don't forget about hats and clothing or swimshirts." We also asked him about spray vs. lotions and he said it is pretty much a matter of consumer preference.

~ BUILT NY - this brand has awesome products, but one of our favorites is this water bottle coozie. It keeps your water bottle even colder and keeps the ice in solid form even when you are out on the beach. It is also great because it can hang from your beach chair. You can find these on www.amazon.com.

Summer "Must-Haves" for the Pool

~California Baby Bug Spray - found at local drugstores and Target - safe, natural, and fun!

~ ThermaCELL Mosquito Repellent - This works wonders by the pool, in the backyard, or camping. This ThermaCELL device dispenses a small amount of repellent into the air over a long period of time. It is powered by a butane cartridge and is cordless. (batteries are not needed) A mat saturated with Allethrin, a copy of a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanthemum flowers, is placed on top of the metal grill. The heat generated by the butane cartridge vaporizes the repellent allowing it to rise into the air, creating a 15 x 15 ft (225 sq ft) “Mosquito-Free-Zone” in minutes. The repellent is very unpleasant to mosquitoes, but when used as directed, will not harm humans or pets. You simply replace the small mat for your next use.

~ New Balance Sandals for kids - We thought these were adorable, functional, and just too smarty! These sandals are available in blue or pink and are perfect for this summer. They are available in infants sizes 7-10 and kids sizes 11-3, whole sizes only. You can find them at New Balance Winston-Salem (located at Thruway Center) and can receive 15% - 30% off by using your Smarty Pants/New Balance Kids Club card (ask for this at the front desk)! 336.722.9559

~ Flip-flop wine glass coasters - These are not only a must-have for yourself when throwing a beach or pool party, but they are a great gift, too! We found these at Evy's Gifts. They have two locations in the Triad - Main Street Kernersville or Battleground in Greensboro.

~ Reusable Swim Diapers - read more about these in our blog here! We have found these at very affordable prices at Babies R Us and Target. Buying a few of these at $6-$10 each is much more cost effective then buying pack after pack of disposable diapers. Plus, you are helping the environment!

~ Puddle Jumper Life Jacket - Found at Target - Just arm floaties alone don't always work well for younger children. We also know that a regular life jacket can help keep your child afloat, but often rotates them in the water so that their face may be submerged or their head thrown back so that they are not upright. This Puddle Jumper life jacket puts two in one and gives children security in the water as they learn to swim. *Parents should still remain close-by, as this is not a life saving device.

~ Picnic Baskets and Coolers - surely you have spotted these adorable picnic baskets by now. We found ours for a bargain at the Buckhead Betties sale, but if you missed it, you can find baskets similar to these at many local gift shops in the Triad including Kim Taylor & Co, and Hip Chics! You can also order one online at GoosiePie Monograms. Baskets can be insulated and some even come with a lid. A new mini version has also been recently distributed to local stores. If you know of other places who sell these, leave us a comment below.

~ The Ultimate Beach bag - Read our blog here! We can't say enough about how much we have loved this bag.

~ Orthaheel Flip-Flops - We found these at Fleet Feet Sports in Winston-Salem. There are variations of this flop for men and women and all are so stylish! But even better than looking good, these flip-flops serve a purpose - "Orthaheel orthotic design helps "reclaim" your natural footprint by restoring the foot's natural (neutral) alignment, enabling the feet, ankles and legs to function as efficiently and dynamically as they were intended."

~ Dry Shampoo - I wrote about this in my Random Show and Tell post. It is great for the pool so your hair does not get the greasy look!

~ The Spooneez Sackpack - You know how we love our Spooneez! Well, we are the first to debut this new item called the Spooneez sackpack! It is so stylish and cute! We thought this was the perfect bag for swim team practice and trips to the pool. It is machine washable, made int he USA, and eco-friendly! These will be available mid-June on the website or at O Baby Organics in Winston-Salem.
