We used family names for all three of our children, two of which unfortunately became very popular over the past few years. Not that it is a bad thing, but I wish we would have chosen names that were a little more unique. I love some of the ideas you listed here.

I am really having fun reading posts on this site. Thanks for starting this. I am passing it along to friends.

We had a really hard time choosing names for our two boys. We wanted something that was not too strange, but also something that wasn't "trying too hard" to be different. I had four other Kellys in my elementary classes and found it aggravating, so we didn't want to pick anything in the top 10 or even the top 100. eventually, the names we chose are in the top 350 and 450—not too odd, not trendy, and not too overused. And yes, three out of their four names (first and middle) are family names.

I recommend the Baby Name Wizard Web site to see where a name has been and where it's going.

I disagree with the idea of pinning a gender to a name. You have labeled Finley a baby boy name. My daughter's name is Finley. We realized this was traditionally a boy's name, but many names that are now thought of as girls' names began as names for a boy - Kelly for example. Just something to think about...
