Second of TWO March Give-Aways: One Free Slot at Eastern Music Festival's Explorers Camp!

By Nana Wolfe-Hill, Director of Educational Programs at Eastern Music Festival

We are thrilled to announce that today's give-away is a generous spot for one lucky camper at Eastern Music Festival's (EMF) Explorers Camp in Greensboro for ages nine and 10. This is valued at $160!! Keep reading to get the full scoop on EMFexplorers as well as other camps and programs offered by EMF. We will choose a winner on Friday, March 12 and announce the winner on our site on Sunday, March 14. Details on registering for this camp are at the end of this blog. - TSP team

If your child hasn’t yet participated in one of the Eastern Music Festival Summer Camps, sign them up! Known as one of the best camps in the area, EMFkids (for ages 4-8) and EMFexplorers (ages 9-10) is a great way to introduce your child to all kinds of music. Geared towards classical music, jazz and blues, and Americana music, kids get to have fun while learning about the orchestra, instruments, and music history. They also receive lots of individual attention because the camps are so well-staffed.

EMFkids focuses on learning about the various instrument families of the orchestra by visiting a pre-professional orchestra every day. They get to go on stage, be right up close to the musicians, and listen to a professional conductor talk about each unique instrument. In addition to this great experience, the instructors of the camp present the material in a fun and accessible manner. The kids move and dance to music, play instruments, make crafts with music themes, etc. This camp is a great way to see if a specific instrument catches your child’s attention (in hopes that they would want to start lessons!). Private music lessons are such a great way to teach kids confidence, good work ethic, and a lifelong joy of music.

EMFkids
Introducing Young People to the Symphony Orchestra
Session 1: July 5 – 9 (Ages 4 & 5)
Session 2: July 12 – 16 (Ages 6 to 8)
Location: Guilford College

The EMFexplorers theme is new this year and is specifically designed for 9- and 10-year-olds – Backstage Pass: The Making of Music. Based mainly at the Music Academy of North Carolina (on Beaman Place near downtown), participants will explore lots of different kinds of music and music professions, including movie and video game music, jazz and blues, Americana, classical music, and composition. Every day is packed with hands-on activities, including a trip to MARS (the Music Academy’s Recording Studio) to make their own individual CD, creating and performing music to a scripted scene or video game, learning from professional bluegrass musicians, and visiting the orchestra.

EMFexplorers
Backstage Pass: The Making of Music
July 19 – 23 (Ages 9 & 10)
Location: Music Academy of North Carolina

EMF's Director of Marketing Ruth Spaulding's 10-year-old daughter, Samantha, attending EMF Explorer's camp and had this to say, “The talent you find in yourself (and the friends you make) at EMFexplorers is sensational. And you get a chance to be taught by some of the best instructors. You’ll make amazing memories that you will never forget.” She went on to start cello lessons after camp!!

The only down side is that the camps fill up fast, so contact EMF now if you’re interested! Visit www.EasternMusicFestival.org/kids.php for more info (including a daily schedule) or call 336.333.7450 x28 for a registration form.

In case you didn’t know, Eastern Music Festival & School is much more than summer camps. It’s a school for aspiring young musicians (aged 14-22) and an internationally-acclaimed summer musical festival. With more than 100 events this season, EMF has lots of great music in store and most of it is extremely family-friendly.

You’ll want to save the date for Peter and the Wolf, a collaboration between EMF and the Greensboro Ballet, coming Saturday, July 24 at 11 am at the historic Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro.

EMF also has two pre-professional orchestras, known as the Young Artists Orchestras, that perform Thursday and Friday evenings in July. They offer a special Family Night package that lets adults bring children aged 12 and under for just $5 per adult and $1 per child (limit two children per adult). This is a great value for a great evening of music!

And, of course, there are plenty of events for date nights, too! Saturday night orchestral concerts with world-famous guest artists, chamber music during the week, and EMFfringe interspersed throughout the festival. The popular EMFfringe series features alternative music featuring everything from Americana to alt country, blues, rock, jazz and gospel.

Events take place every night during the season and at various locations all over the Triad, predominantly on the campus of Guilford College and in downtown Greensboro, and at other Greensboro, Elon, High Point, Winston-Salem, and Boone locations.

Please visit www.EasternMusicFestival.org to learn more about EMF’s 49th season and EMFkids events. Season tickets are on sale now and single tickets will go on sale beginning June 1st.

First of TWO March Give-Aways: One Free Slot at Salem Sports Camp for Kids!

By Allison T, Triad Smarty Pants

It is time for our March Giveaway, and the TSP team is thrilled to announce that we are giving away TWO camp spots to two lucky Smarty readers! We know your children will love the camps we have in store. Today will begin the giveaway for the incredible Salem Sports Camp For Kids, and tomorrow we will introduce the Eastern Music Festival and give details on the camp spot that they are giving away. Read below to learn more about Salem Sports Camp for Kids and to register. Then tune back in tomorrow for a second giveaway! - TSP team

I cannot believe it is Summer Camp registration time as I sit writing this watching snow fall out my window! I am excited to tell you today about my kids’ favorite summer camp that they attended last year. It is Salem Sports Camp for Kids, put on by Salem Academy. And guess what? They are giving one lucky Lil’ Smarty a spot at their week-long sports camp (valued at $145)! Details on registering for this give-away are at the bottom of this blog.

AND, on top of all of this (plus other discounts mentioned below), Salem Sports Camp for Kids is offering ALL Triad Smarty Pants’ readers an additional $5 OFF if you mention TSP when you register.

When I first heard about Salem Sports Camp for Kids, I was really excited for my kids to go to camp on the beautiful grounds of Salem Academy and College. It turns out that the Academy grounds were just a bonus. It was the exposure to all of the different activities, quality of the staff and counselors and social aspect that made this a top-notch camp.

I remember the day I called Lorie Howard, the Athletic Director at Salem Academy and founder of Salem Sports Camp for Kids, to get the scoop on these new sports camps that I had been hearing about. Within minutes of discussing all of the camp details, I knew this was the camp that my 4-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son needed to experience.

One of the many things I loved about Salem Sports Camp was the secure and structured environment it provided for my children. I dropped them off every morning knowing that they were going to be taken care of. The camper to counselor ratio is no more than seven campers to one instructor. I also loved the fact that my children were exposed to new activities. They talked my ear off every afternoon about what they experienced that day…golf, archery, T-ball, tennis, swimming, soccer. You name it, they tried it.

Salem Sports Camp for Kids is a half-day program for ages 4-11. They divide up the campers by their age and gender, so everyone is comfortable in their setting. The camp day is from 8:30am – 1pm, includes a morning snack, a well-balanced, nutritional lunch provided by Salem Academy, drinks and a T-shirt – all of these were huge pluses for me! I didn’t have to worry about packing two lunches every morning or fight with anyone on what they were wearing.

Also, this is one of the most reasonably priced camps my children have attended. If you have more than one child to register, there is a 25% discount for each sibling. There is also a discount for each additional week you enroll your child.

I am highly recommending you consider Salem Sports Camp for Kids this summer. You will not be disappointed! I also recommend that you email or call Lorie Howard with any questions. She is an amazing person and Camp Director. She answered all of my questions and more. Her information is lorie.howard@salem.edu or sportscamp@salem.edu , 336-721-2732.

To register to win a slot at Salem Sports Camp for Kids, be sure you are signed up to receive Triad Smarty Pants' weekly newsletter, then click here to take a short survey. We will choose a winner on Friday, March 12 and announce the winner on our site on Sunday, March 14. Good luck, Smarties!

Happy camping!

June Smarty Giveaway: One Free Slot at Sawtooth’s ½ Day Summer Art Camps

By Katie M

The Sawtooth School for Visual Art (SSVA), the premier community visual arts school in the North Carolina Piedmont Triad, is giving one lucky Lil’ Smarty a complimentary slot in one of its half-day summer art programs (valued at $145/week for non-members or $125/week for members)! Or, you can apply this gift towards the purchase of a full-day slot (valued at $255/week for non-members and $235/week for members). What a deal!

Sawtooth provides art education to nurture the development of critical thinking, aesthetic appreciation, creativity, and personal growth. The school offers a number of different camp programs for children ages 4 through 11 beginning June 22. In addition there are great “Art Focus” camps for 3rd-5th and 6-8th graders with workshops focused on ceramics, animation, jewelry making and digital photography. Click here for more details on Sawtooth's camps, dates, and times. To register for this give-away, keep reading to the bottom of this post!

Here’s what Clare A, a loyal TSP reader, had to say about her experience at Sawtooth:

“Since we have recently moved to a new house, I have discovered ‘new’ treasures in some of the boxes as we unpacked. A nice example includes some pottery pieces, crafted and painted by my now 13-year-old daughter, Katie Gray, several years ago.

She had attended a friend’s birthday party at the Sawtooth where each child had made a little pottery sculpture. She had a really fun time, and we signed her up for a 1-week camp at the Sawtooth that summer. She took more pottery classes and made a few pieces that will remain among our favorite pieces of art for life. (She also had a really good time!)

A friend of my parents’ recently told me that she still had her grown son’s handmade pottery from his childhood out on display in their living room. Of all the art that children make, very few pieces are kept and treasured this long. I have decided it is time to bring those pottery animals out and display them in a more prized spot in our new living room now.”

So if you’re still on the hunt for summer camp ideas, here’s the perfect solution! Your child will not only have fun, but will have an adventure, discover his or her hidden talents, and have lots of laughs during this ‘artful’ experience!

To register for this give-away, you must first be a Triad Smarty Pants newsletter subscriber, and then click here to register. (This giveaway has now ended.) Last day to register for this give-away is Friday, June 12, and the winner will be announced on Sunday, June 14.

Good luck Smarties!
