Smarty Sponsor: Kaley Orthodontics

By Mark H. Kaley, DDS, Kaley Orthodontics

When I talk to parents both in and out of our office, three topics come up over and over again: thumb sucking, tooth spacing, and orthodontic timing. If you are like most, there was no need to consider such things until that first glimmer of white pops through your baby’s gums. If you are like me, these questions then become some of the many parenting thoughts that keep you up at night.

Below are some tips regarding these hot topics, plus things to consider when selecting an orthodontist. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a question for me in the comment section below and I'll do my best to get right back to you with an answer.

It can be a little scary to see a thumb sucking habit hang on longer in your child than some of their friends, but don’t get worried quite yet. In most cases, the little one will self-wean as they get closer to school age. One good sign that it is on the way out is when they start using it only at night or when they are tired. While I will fully admit to cringing when I saw my three-year-old sucking her thumb like it was her job, it soon became the surest sign that she was ready for a nap. Most problems created by thumb or pacifier habits can be easily correct with treatment later. However, if you are concerned, talk to your orthodontist or dentist. There are some aids that can help start the process of breaking the habit.

Many parents notice the gaps between their toddler’s shiny new teeth and see a need to start an orthodontic fund. Don’t panic! Even spaces between those baby whites is just what we want. When a child’s permanent teeth start coming in around six or seven, those spaces provide valuable real estate for the larger adult teeth. In fact, a “perfect” gapless grin in a toddler can mean crowding later. My three-year-old’s thumb sucking isn’t an issue, but her tight teeth let me know she’ll grace one of my treatment chairs one day!

If you find yourself at your child’s dentist wondering why she just told your first grader, “It’s about time to meet the orthodontist,” you are not alone. Most parents are rightfully confused, since their child still has mostly baby teeth and hardly fits the image of the “braced” teen.

It is true that full braces are used most effectively and efficiently during the peak growth years – girls usually starting around 11, boys around 12 or 13. By this time the baby teeth are gone, the permanent teeth have come in; and the body’s natural growth spurt is, orthodontically speaking, on your side. So, why would a seven-year-old need to see an orthodontist?

There are many reasons. They could have a crossbite (where some of the upper teeth are behind the lower teeth), severe crowding, early loss of some baby teeth, or an esthetic problem that is bothering them, like protrusive upper front teeth. While not necessarily common, these problems can often be corrected in a shorter time (usually less than 12 months) and with fewer appliances at a younger age. In most cases, being referred to an orthodontist simply means your child will be checked every 6-12 months until they are ready for treatment. It is better to get an opinion early rather than miss the best opportunity to treat your child, especially if your dentist suggested it.

Once you’re ready to make an appointment how do you pick the right doctor? If your dentist was the first to bring it up, he or she may have a list of orthodontists that they have worked with and trust. It also helps to talk with friends who have had or currently have braces who will give you an “in the trenches” perspective. Opinions from local message boards and blogs offer additional valuable thoughts on practitioners around the area.

Most importantly, visit several orthodontists before making a decision. Does the doctor use the techniques best for your child? Do they have the training and affiliations you are comfortable with? Does the practice feel organized and caring? Does the doctor listen to you? Orthodontic treatment can be a lot of fun, but it is also a commitment of both time and money. You want to make sure that the “fit” is right for you and your child. Every orthodontist has a different personality – find the one that works best for you.

Don’t feel weird about early visits to the orthodontist! You can come away with a clear plan if there is anything to address, or a reprieve if not. Talk to your dentist and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Orthodontics is a very interactive process, and the best results are the ones we achieve together!

Smarty Day Trip Series: Our Own Greensboro

By Rachel H and Guest Blogger, Lori Redding

This week we are continuing our Day Trip Series by focusing on enjoyable venues for families right here in our own Triad area. We have run numerous Day Trips about adventurous places to take your family outside of the Triad area as well, so be sure to check out our Day Trip category to view archived blogs.

Today, Lori has highlighted some of her favorite family spots in the Greensboro area. As we all know, you could spend months in the Greensboro area and never run out of new places to visit, so be sure to add any ideas that you think our readers would enjoy! ... Rachel H

You may hear teenagers poor-mouthing about how there’s nothing to do in Greensboro. Chances are slim, though, that you’d ever hear a similar line from parents of young children in the Gate City. In fact, there are so many great spots to hit that you could never get to them all in one Smarty Day Trip.

The Greensboro Children’s Museum is a perfect place to start. The newest highlight is the Edibile Schoolyard. This large outdoor garden is perfectly cared for and is an amazing educational opportunity. From rows of beautiful vegetables to a chicken coup and fish pond, the Schoolyard offers children the chance to learn about farming and where their food comes from. You might even get to do some hands on picking, planting or tasting while you’re there. To beat the heat, step inside and enjoy the many great exhibits the kids will love.
220 North Church Street
Greensboro, NC 27401
(336) 574-2898

If it’s near lunch time, don’t miss a chance to drop by Brown-Gardiner Drug Store. One of Greensboro’s favorite lunch spots, the lunch counter has great sandwiches and a quaint charm to take you back to days gone by. It’s perfect for kids, too, featuring fresh-made menu items like grilled cheese, hot dogs and orange-aid. You’ll love it!
2101 North Elm Street
Greensboro, NC 27408
(336) 273-0596

Next stop is the Natural Science Center of Greensboro. Just a quick drive up Lawndale Drive brings you to another learning lesson. Now instead of fruits and vegetables you’ll be learning about animals from all over the world. Indoors you’ll find lots of interactive exhibits including full-sized dinosaurs and aquariums housing a nurse shark. Head outside for a quick trip around the globe. There are alligators, lemurs, snakes and much more. Our favorite areas are the tigers and maned wolves. Seeing these awesome creatures strut within just a few feet helps the kids (and the moms) gain a better appreciation of their power.
4301 Lawndale Drive
Greensboro, NC 27455
(336) 288-3769

Now that you’ve experienced the natural world, why not go grab some books to continue the learning? A short trip out New Garden Road brings you to Price Park, one of Greensboro’s crown jewels. The Park was acquired by Piedmont Land Conservancy in 1999 and conveyed to the City to become a nature-focused park for the people. It contains hiking trails, a butterfly meadow and a native grassland under restoration. For nature lovers it’s the perfect place to explore and see their favorite wildlife. In addition, Price Park is home to the Kathleen Clay Edwards Family Branch Library. The library is the most visited in the Greensboro Library system. It contains a wealth of educational materials to help kids learn more about the natural world just outside its doors.
1420 Price Park Road
Greensboro, NC 27410
(336) 373-2923

If you’ve still got a few hours or want to plan another Smarty Day Trip there’s much more to be found. Bur-Mil Park has fishing opportunities, a public pool and great trails for the family to enjoy. You can check out TSP's list of favorite Greensboro parks here. The Bog Garden near Friendly Center is a great place to stretch your legs, feed the ducks and take a stroll. Afterwards you can swing through Friendly Center where there’s something for everyone – Great Outdoor Provision Company for dad, Toys & Co. for the kiddos and the moms will love a few quite moment in Simply Meg's to catch up on all their fashion needs.

Lori, we thank you for all your ideas! I am so excited to check out the drug store and let my kids order some classic food! Speaking of food, all my friends know that I have two favorite reasons for visiting Greensboro on a regular basis - PF Chang's and The Melting Pot! YUM! If you have not been to either of these, you have GOT to go! (Take note, that The Melting Pot is actually a better venue for a date night instead of a family spot. On the other hand, Chang's has a great kids' menu!) What is your favorite thing to do in Greensboro?

Photo Tips & Tricks from a Local Pro

By Katie M

It’s pretty obvious photography is important to moms. We see it all the time here at Triad Smarty Pants. Any give-away on our site promoting free or discounted sessions with local photographers gets the highest number of participants. We are constantly receiving the cutest pics from moms who blog for us or who enter our contests. So whether you capture images alongside a professional or behind the camera yourself, it’s always important to know the basics so you can be sure you’re getting what you want. No one knows this better than our newest Smarty Sponsor – Triad photographer Abigail Seymour.

Abigail has been featured in Real Simple magazine, The New York Times, The Knot, Weddings Unveiled, Southern Weddings, Martha Stewart Weddings, and on Style Me Pretty, the Ultimate Wedding Blog. Her portrait images are also used regularly by TinyPrints.com in their promotions. And now she is not only offering tips and tricks today for all us shooters out there, but she is also offering TSP readers $25 off her workshops designed for the budding photographer in all of us.

“There are few things I love more than talking about photography, so creating a way to share the things I have learned is a treat for me,” says Abigail on her web site. “I’ve been shooting weddings for six years, portraits for four, and have made every small business mistake imaginable along the way, which I hope to help you avoid! I’ve been lucky enough to have had my work recognized in print and online, and one of my images was selected as a PDN Top Knots winner this year.”

Abigail's beginner workshops, called Shutterbabes, are offered every so often for those who have rarely or not yet used a digital SLR camera. Topics include How to Get Comfortable Using Your Camera’s Basic Functions, How to Best Use Natural Light, What to Do with the Images Once You’ve Shot Them, The Best Lenses for Photographing Children, How To Make Any Location into the Perfect One, Next Steps if You Are Interested in Learning More, and Recommendations for Printers, Vendors, Equipment, Web Site, Books and More. All this for just $125/ticket, and just $100 for TSP readers!!

Just check out some of these "Before and After" pictures taken by moms before Abigail's workshop, and after:

Her July 24th workshop is already full, but the next class is in the works for September and Abigail is taking names to be added to the waiting list. Additionally, Abigail is introducing Shutterbabes 2, an intermediate class for former and new students who want to dig a little deeper into what they have learned. If interested in either of these classes, you can email Diana at diana@abigailseymour.com. Workshop tickets can be purchased online as classes are announced.

And now for some quick tips, check out this Q&A we had with Abigail:

As moms, why is it important to learn to take good photos the right way vs. just shooting as we do?
Digital technology and access to images and sharing has improved so much in the past few years, so families are empowered to be their own archivists. People no longer have to rely entirely on the old-fashioned indoor or mall studio for family portraits (although I certainly think hiring a professional at least once a year is a great thing!). An entry-level digital SLR camera (a Canon Rebel, e.g.) is not too much more expensive than a pocket point-and-shoot, so learning how to use them is the next step.

What do we need to think about in terms of lighting, background, subjects?
I encourage people to shoot in natural light only, reserving flash for "snapshot" moments (like at holidays and such) where you just have to go with the moment. By keeping backgrounds simple, choosing clothing without logos, and getting as close to your subject as you can, you'll see a big change in your images. One of my favorite quotations is by a photographer who once said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, then you aren't close enough."

Why is it important to buy a good camera – and in regards to your workshops – a digital SLR?
One of the main aspects of what we talk about in the workshop has to do with upgrading your lens -- point-and-shoot cameras do not have detachable/interchangable lenses, so your creative options are limited. Without a good lens, you are driving a Ferrari with old Honda tires on it! You can spend as little as $99 on a quality lens and see a dramatic improvement. I provide a number of different lenses during the workshop for people to sample, and participants can take advantage of a discount offered at a lens rental company in order to test them on their own, too.

What are some things moms typically do wrong in taking pictures?
The easiest mistake to make is to take photos in bright sunlight -- it looks so cheerful to our eyes, but the camera doesn't translate it well. The three most important things to remember are: shade, shade, shade! :)

Are there things we can do with our children to help us with our picture taking such as setting them up, keeping them still?
Most kids, with the exception of babies under 6-9 months, will never stay still (as moms know well!) so the key is having a camera that has a very fast shutter (like the SLRs) and a lens that can capture all the finest details.

And if moms can’t afford digital SLR cameras, are there things we can do to maximize our shots on the cameras we have?
The main thing to do is find the button on your camera that turns off your automatic flash -- miracles will happen if you do!

What do we need to look for in buying a good camera – digital SLRs and others?
The easiest thing to do is not stray from Nikon and Canon -- they are the strongest brands and have the most quality lenses. Lenses stay with you forever, so as you upgrade your camera body you can still use the same lenses. I have lenses that I've been using for 15 years, even though the camera bodies have advanced and progressed and I've gone through at least 10 of them. As someone once said to me, "invest in glass" (i.e. pay more attention to your lens than the camera body)

Thanks, Abigail for all these invaluable tips! I know a lot of moms, including myself, have been looking for this type of information. And I can’t wait to find out the dates of your upcoming workshops. Keep us posted!

And don't forget to register to win a family four-pack of tickets to see Peter & the Wolf, compliments of Eastern Music Festival. Two TSP newsletter subscribers will win four tickets each! To register for these tickets, click here. This giveaway ends Friday, July 9. Good luck, Smarties!

Smarty Sponsor: Proehlific Park

By Jill Jones, Vice President, Proehlific Park Family Sports Complex and Fitness Center

Summer is finally here! Are you looking for ways to keep your kids (and your husband) happy, entertained, and active? Look no further! Proehlific Park in Greensboro has just what everyone in your family needs this summer. The mission of Proehlific Park lies in its play on the word "prolific": to nourish and be fruitful. Proehlific Park, a family sports complex and fitness center, is a safe and loving "home away from home" where youth in the Triad experience a disciplined, caring and learning atmosphere. Proehlific Park symbolizes an encouraging environment that inspires purpose in a child's life and, above all, a place where kids can not only experience "The P.O.W.E.R. of Play," but also learn the "Skills to Succeed."

Ricky Proehl built Proehlific Park over two years ago with the idea of having a fun and safe environment for families and that is exactly what has been accomplished. Our 22-acre indoor and outdoor facility is nothing like any place you’ve ever seen.

From the second you walk in the doors of our indoor facility or onto an outside field at Proehlific Park you can feel the energy from not only the families but the entire staff. People often ask if Ricky ever spends time at Proehlific Park…in fact, you can find him at the Park every day of the week. Ricky is completely hands on - from running his football camps to playing dodge ball with the summer care kids. Don’t be surprised if he jumps in on a game of pickup basketball. After all he is just a big kid himself.

Proehlific Park is offering 11 different types of sports camps for kids, including: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, football, golf, lacrosse, multi-sports, soccer, softball, speed & agility, and volleyball.

For accommodation purposes the camps are offered at a variety of times throughout the summer. Each camp will be led by experienced and trained coaches and staff. We are also offering a summer care program where kids have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities from different types of sports to arts/crafts, relay races; moon bounces every Wednesday, water day every Friday and much more!

For the husband that never really gave up being the “high school superstar”, we have a full size indoor turf football field for so that he can revisit his “playing” days. We have plenty of room to throw the football with friends or your kids. We have 7 indoor batting cages, an indoor golf driving range, basketball and volleyball courts, fitness classes, a full weight room, cardio equipment….and so much more. Get off that couch, it’s bathing suit season! Coming to Proehlific Park and swinging a bat, throwing a football, shooting a few “jumpers” are a lot more fun that sweating it out in a small dark room on a stationary bicycle!

One this is certain that here at Proehlific Park you will never run out of fun activities to do. We want you and your children to be happy, healthy and active. Come join us for a summer of fun at Proehlific Park.

Please visit our website to learn more about all of the summer opportunities at Proehlific Park. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call!!

July Giveaway: Two Family 4-Packs to EMF's Peter & the Wolf

By Nana Wolfe-Hill, Director of Educational Programs at Eastern Music Festival

EMFkids, part of the world-renowned Eastern Music Festival & School, is proud to offer TWO Triad Smarty Pants readers four tickets each to the family favorite – Peter and the Wolf. The concert, fun for the entire family, is a collaboration between EMF and the Greensboro Ballet, and will be narrated by Fox 8’s Neill McNeill. The concert has one showing at the historic Carolina Theatre in downtown Greensboro on Saturday, July 24, at 11am. Join us in the lobby at 10:30 am for some fun, pre-concert activities.

Details on how to register for this giveaway are at the end of the blog. You must be a TSP newsletter subscriber to win. This promotion will run until Noon on Friday, July 9, and the winners will be announced on our site on Sunday, July 11.

Peter and the Wolf was composed by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936 after his return to the Soviet Union. It is a beloved children's story (with both music and text by Prokofiev), spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra. The story, while enjoyable at face value, is also designed to teach children about the orchestra with each character associated with a particular instrument and theme:
• Bird: flute
• Duck: oboe
• Cat: clarinet
• Grandfather: bassoon
• Wolf: horn
• Hunters: woodwind theme, with gunshots on timpani and bass drum
• Peter: string instruments

The Story
Peter, while at his grandfather's home in a forest clearing, goes out of the yard, leaving the garden gate open. The duck that lives in the yard takes the opportunity to go swimming on the nearby pond. She starts arguing with a little bird ("What kind of bird are you if you can't fly?" – "What kind of bird are you if you can't swim?"). Peter's pet cat sneaks up on them, and the bird —warned by Peter— flies to safety in a tall tree while the duck swims to safety in the middle of the pond.

Peter's grandfather scolds Peter for being outside in the meadow ("Suppose a wolf came out of the forest?"), and, when Peter defies him, his grandfather takes him back into the house and locks the gate. Shortly afterwards "a big, grey wolf" does indeed come out of the woods. The cat quickly climbs into the tree, but the duck, who has excitedly jumped out of the pond, is chased, overtaken and gulped down by the wolf.

Peter fetches a rope and climbs over the garden wall into the tree. He asks the bird to fly around the wolf's head to distract him, while he lowers a noose and catches the wolf by his tail. The wolf struggles to get free, but Peter ties the rope to the tree and the noose only gets tighter.

Some hunters, who have been tracking the wolf, come out of the forest ready to shoot, but Peter gets them to help him take the wolf to the zoo in a victory parade that includes himself, the bird, the hunters leading the wolf, the cat and grumpy grumbling Grandfather. In the story's ending, the listener is told that "if you listen very carefully, you'd hear the duck quacking inside the wolf's belly, because the wolf in his hurry had swallowed her alive."

Shop 'Til You Drop at Evy's Gifts

By Rachel H

If you've got an itch to shop, now is the perfect time to drop by Evy's Gifts! Not only is everything in the store 20% off, but in addition, Evy's will feature one collection each week at 40% off! Sign up to be a Facebook Fan here by clicking "like" on the Evy's Gifts page, and you will receive a post each week stating the new 40% off category sale!

The best part of having Evy's as one of our Smarty Sponsors is that they have two convenient locations for all our shoppers in the Triad. One store is on Main Street in Kernersville, which is an easy drive from High Point, and only fifteen minutes from downtown Winston-Salem. Their second location is on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro, so it is a quick stop for all our Burlington and Greensboro friends.

I stopped in Evy's this past week and could not help but take advantage of the 20% off storewide sale. I bought a few gifts, as well as some items for myself! I also chose a handful of items to highlight on Triad Smarty Pants today. I thought these items were very unique and would be great gift items for so many women!

Shown above is just one style of the Two's Company Reusable bags sold at Evy's. These are only $7.50 regularly, which is already a great deal, but even better if you stop in during the 20% sale! I thought these were affordable enough to buy for yourself or as a small gift item for a friend.

Are these button rings not the cutest things you have ever seen? I snatched one of these up as part of a gift for a special teen. There were so many bright colors and designs from which to choose. These are made by Refashioned - Renewed, Recycled, Remade Vintage & Recycled Buttons. Are you ready for the best part? The regular price of one of these rings is only $4.50! Can you say, "Give me ten?" Earrings and bracelets are also available.

The plates shown above are just a small sample of the beautiful Maggie Weldon Collection. Maggie is a local potter who calls her collection "Lace Pottery." Photos do not do justice to her pieces. The design and color on each piece is gorgeous. I thought her pottery would be beautiful on the walls, as serving pieces, candle dishes, etc. Her prices vary, but are very affordable.

The photos above are bags that are handmade out of candy wrappers and newspapers. The brand name is Nahui Ollin, and I thought these were a perfect gift idea for the woman who already has it all! I bought one of these as a gift for a teen as well. They range in price from $25-$55, but again, you can save 20% on these right now!

Last, but not least, I spotted this jewelry under the counter at Evy's and thought it was all so much fun! The leather flower bracelets are made by Two's Company and retail for only $18.75. The silver bracelets not only make a bold statement, but most of the ones shown above are only $11.25. How fun would it be to throw one of these on to jazz up a summer sundress?

Keep your eyes open for more fabulous finds from our Smarty Sponsor, Evy's Gifts. Be sure to stop by soon to take advantage of the 20% off storewide sale! When you checkout, you will receive a fun reusable Evy's Gifts bag as well!

Smarty Sponsor: The Club at Oak Branch

By Guest Blogger, Karen H

It's that time of the year again...Schools out and Summer is in!!!! What will your family be doing to cool off? Hit the WATER! Kids love it at any age, whether it’s the sprinkler in your yard, your neighborhood swimming pool, or a trip to the lake or beach. As a parent, you want to be sure that in addition to your kids having a great time, they have the skills to be safe around water. Why not help give your child the life long skills for water safety with swim lessons? They don’t have to become the next Michael Phelps, but at a minimum you want to teach your child how to be safe when in or around water.

The best swim lessons for kids focus on giving your child positive learning experiences in the water. The Club at Oak Branch offers nurturing, positive and encouraging swim lessons for infants as young as three months through the teenage years! Whether you’re interested in learning proper form and technique or you’re looking for that extra edge for competitive swimming, This is the place for swim instruction! Plus, if you mention Triad Smarty Pants when you call, you'll get 10% off any Summer Camp or Swim Session!!!!

Swim lessons at The Club emphasize your child’s individual needs and skill level. They offer small class sizes and qualified experienced staff who encourage a whole life approach to swim lessons. Not only will your child learn proper form, your child will gain confidence, self-esteem and an inner sense of accomplishment as they learn new skills and progress through their lessons. They also encourage their swimmers to participate in new challenges beyond their lessons with events like our “Fun Swim Meet" and “Youth Triathlon”. These events emphasize personal best and the thrill of accomplishment in an enjoyable non-threatening environment. Kids love to learn that, yes - they can do it!

This is a great testimonial from a parent whose child took lessons at The Club:
"My son has taken swimming classes at The Club at Oak Branch for more than seven years. He started as a baby and now swims all four strokes very well at the swim team level. The Aquatics Director, Maria Gonzalez, is very approachable and always accommodating. She strives to be certain every student is completely satisfied with their swimming education and experience. The Club at Oak Branch has the nicest pool in Greensboro! My son loves the slides, basketball goal, underwater music, and Jacuzzi. I enjoy being able to watch him swim while I exercise upstairs. Most importantly, my son has always enjoyed his swimming classes at here. As a result, he has developed a love for swimming and genuinely looks forward to each class. Swimming is a wonderful life skill and The Club at Oak Branch is a great place for kids to learn to swim."

For parents who are looking for suggestions on helping their children enjoy water and become swimmers, the easiest way is to start from the beginning! As infants, make bath time a relaxed and fun time for your baby. Gently sprinkle water on your little one’s face, play games and sing songs to make bath time a pleasant experience. Get in the tub or shower with baby! Your infant will pick up on your cues that this is a safe, fun and welcoming environment, a warm and nurturing time to enjoy. Repetition of making bath time, and later on swim time, a fun positive place to be, encourages your child to enjoy the water.

As your child grows into toddlerhood, they realize that separation anxiety is a normal developmental stage for your child to go through. One of life’s great lessons for kids (and adults!) to learn, is that yes, it’s okay to be un-certain of new things, but if you just TRY, you learn you CAN do it, and WOW! The boost to self esteem and sense of independence your child achieves from that is huge! You can help them with this stage by maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude that they are going to have a great time and learn amazing things in their swim class, and they can show you all about it! Make bath and swim time a place for special toys (squirt toys, floating toys, balls, etc), give Spiderman or that special baby doll water time too! If your child is fearful, try to pinpoint what is their specific worry. Sometimes it’s as simple as a pair of goggles to protect eyes or a warm coverup for when class is over. You are your child’s best role model. Be patient, be encouraging, be positive. Remember it can be hard to learn new things, but what an adventure when you do!

In addition to The Club’s swim sessions, we also offer several Summer Camp options:

-Full Day Camp (for kids 5-12 yrs old) or a Half-Day Camp
option for 2 1/2 to 5 year olds.
-Weekly themed camps—pick your favorites-Pirates, Legos, Mad Scientists and more!
-We also offer Sports Specific Camps and Swim Camps!

All camp options include daily swim lessons!!! Your child is sure to love the summer time while at The Club at Oak Branch!

*Remember, mention Triad Smarty Pants when you call and get 10% off any Summer Camp or Swim Session!!!!
