Tips for Cleaning and Taking Care of Jewelry

- If your sterling silver jewelry becomes tarnished, it can easily be restored by washing it with warm water and mild soap, rinsing it and thoroughly drying it with a fine soft cloth. Soaking is discouraged.

- Always take your sterling silver jewelry off before applying suntan lotion, skin creams, and swimming in chlorinated or salt water. Never use tissues or hard brushes, including toothbrushes, when cleaning or polishing your sterling silver, as they will leave scratch marks. This is especially important if there are gemstones such as pearls mounted into your jewelry.

- Never wear your sterling silver jewelry when working with detergents, bleaches, ammonia or alcohols; these chemicals will cause discoloration, damage and loosen any gemstones. Never use an ultrasonic cleaner, ammonia or any chemical solution to clean opaque gemstones, such as turquoise, malachite, onyx, lapis lazuli and opals. They are porous gemstones and may absorb chemicals, which build up inside the stone and cause discoloration. Simply wipe them gently with a moist soft cloth until clean.

April Giveaway: Whitebox Kids Photography Free Photo Session + $100 print credit

Have you ever looked at your children? I mean really looked at them ... and realized how much they've changed since they first came into your life? It's amazing how quickly they grow and how those silly toothless smiles and goofy expressions are here one day and gone the next. They might be replaced by something even better, but nonetheless, they're gone. Sure, the memories are in your heart, but nothing preservers your memory like a photograph. I have been having Whitebox Photography photograph my children for the past five years, and the only regret I have is that I didn't start sooner. My children are now 12, 10, and 7 and the photos they've taken still stop my heart every time I look at them.

My house is positively filled with images from our Whitebox photo shoots! It makes me happy to see them every day and can think of nothing better to display on my walls. A generic print cannot compare with the photo of my daughter when she got her first puppy. Or the shot of my son with his two front teeth missing. My photos are without a doubt the most important material things that I own.

Whitebox does a fabulous job of what I call "capturing my children having fun." This is what brings their images to life. Gone are the forced smiles and the shrieks of "look at the camera!" My children look forward to their Whitebox shoots because they know they're just going to be playing and doing the things they love to do and the photography just sort of happens. The focus is on them being happy.

I used to get so stressed out bringing my kids to the photographer at the mall. Will I pick out the right outfit? What if they're in a bad mood? What if we get a bad photographer? What if the props and backgrounds don't match the clothes I picked out? All of those worries are gone since I've been using Whitebox. They help me every step of the way. Before the shoot, we talk about what we want to do- from location to props to wardrobe. I arrive with bunches of clothes and "1-2-3" the Whitebox gals pick out the things that look great together and photograph well. We head outside and my kids start doing their thing - riding bikes, blowing bubbles, running through the sprinkler, playing football, playing the guitar, skipping stones-whatever they're into at that time. They barely notice they're being photographed.

And afterwards, when I see those images ... unbelievable! A work of art, only better, because it's someone you love!

Yes, there is so much to do this weekend in the Triad, but I am reserving a few hours on Saturday to attend this wonderful event inspired and created by local women like yourself. There is not one individual word to describe this event, so our guest blogger Liz summed it up like this, "Funky. Eclectic. Whimsical. Fabulous. Recycled. Ultra-cool. Inspirational. FUN!"

This is an event not to miss. The 13th annual Fall Sale features all hand-crafted works of art in metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, wood, and much more. Shop the gamut from sculpture, collage, garden art, and mosaics to jewelry, wearable art, pottery, and decorative treasures. Join over 65 artists for a day of creative celebration. There is nothing else quite like it in the Triad.

Whimsical Women was founded 13 years ago by Luli and Linda, 2 very creative sisters who wanted to honor their mother’s memory through art. The first event started as a small show and each year has grown as other female artists have asked to join in. The group is now over 125 artists strong from all over North Carolina, so you may be surprised to see a familiar face of a friend who is showing off her artwork this year as well. Whimsical Women gives new artists the opportunity to put their artwork out to the public through a network of support and encouragement.


The Whimsical Women Art Shows have always focused on celebrating women artists and creating a festive atmosphere for all to enjoy. There are 2 Sales each year: one in Pfafftown in the fall and one in the Chapel Hill area in early May.

As you can tell from the photos throughout this blog, there is a little something for everyone. As if this display of artwork and creativity was not enough, delicious food and refreshments will also be served. One of our loyal readers, Suellen Thompson has used Zoe Zen quite a few times now and shared with us how much she truly values the talent that Zoe offers...

Suellen … Having professional photographs taken is like a form of serious torture for me. They feel so permanent. The effort and money that you put into them… I don’t know why, but it stresses me out beyond belief! I think it must be the pressure of finding the perfect outfits, because of course I want to find something for everyone that complements the others without being too over the top matchy. I search high and low for the most beautiful setting at this particular time of year. I prefer outdoor photos to indoor studio shots. Once the place has been selected I must pray for spectacular weather-not too hot, too cold, humid, please no rain or too cloudy. Then of course there is all the effort that I have to put into coordinating a time when it is convenient for everyone (especially my husband who will try to avoid having the photos taken at all costs)! We must avoid naptimes, mealtimes or the bewitching hour of 4-7pm for toddlers. Also there is me! I am not a prissy girl, but I really want to look great in the photos, so I work really hard to “do my hair” and apply makeup. This nearly kills me. Finally, I must select the least staining snacks possible and manage the task of getting everyone to the scene without any major meltdowns about why the bright yellow crocs just can’t be worn today.

So as you can tell, professional photographing sessions REALLY stress me out!!!! But when we met our photographer and friend Zoe, of Zoe Zen Photography for our photo session, I was so relieved when she took control. I had already discussed some things with her that I did not want the photos to be like, so she knew just what I hoped for. I wanted the portraits to be very casual and playful, more candid, not staged or stuffy. I wanted the portraits to really look like us. She brought fun
things like pinwheels and bubbles to distract and entertain my 4 year old and 15 month old. I was so pleased at the end of the session. I was even more thrilled with the photographs. One of my favorites of my daughter is pictured here on left.

I have not gone back to another studio since our first session with Zoe. I even had her take photographs at my son’s 2nd birthday party which was the best! (picture at the right). She took care of the pictures so that I could relish in watching him struggle to blow out those two candles. She also found quiet moments of just him on that special day with that beautiful birthday glow. Moments I missed because I had to host the party and keep rowdy toddlers inline. I regret that I had not done that sooner! I think I have maybe 4 photos from my daughter’s 2nd birthday party.

I’m so excited to have found a photographer who is patient with children, pays attention to small details and moments and mostly who helps me relax and enjoy the process of the session.

Charity Chicks: Resolve to Join Today!

I finally did it! I actually kept my New Year’s resolution...yes, it was from 2007, but I kept it! Many of you are wondering what it was. Did I lose those last 5 lbs? Did I clean out that garage? Nooooooo still working on those, but I did recently fulfill another goal. With the help of my good friend Jamie Marlowe (pictured right with Casey, left), we have started a new non-profit for women in the Winston-Salem area called Charity Chicks.

We are excited because it allows women the flexibility to give back to the community in whatever way fits their lifestyle. We are both busy moms with school-age and pre-school children, and we realize how challenging it can be to find time for volunteering. We hope that Charity Chicks will make it easy for women to get more involved in their community. Giving back should be fun and rewarding; not just another stressful obligation.

Each year the members of Charity Chicks will dedicate their efforts toward fundraising and volunteering for a local non-profit making a difference in our area. For 2010 we have chosen the Community Care Center. The mission of the Community Care Center is to provide access to high-quality health care services to the uninsured in Forsyth, Stokes and Davie counties. This year, Charity Chicks will be supporting the CCC by providing volunteers and fundraising to promote this worthy cause.

We are pleased to say we have nearly 100 members prior to hosting our Kickoff Party which will take place October 15, at the Westwood Swim & Tennis Club from 7-9 pm. Grab a friend and come out for drinks and desserts, and find out what Charity Chicks is all about!

The creation of Charity Chicks has allowed me to reach one of my personal goals. Through the help of many friends, I have been able to have a dream come to reality. These women were extremely affected by their mother’s second diagnosis with Fallopian Tube Cancer earlier this year. They chose to honor their mom, and any other women fighting this horrible disease, by developing a T-shirt simply saying “Screw Cancer, Eat Cake!” One T-shirt turned into 5, then 10...

Unfortunately, this hits home all too well for me, as my own mom is currently undergoing her fourth round of chemo in 10 years for ovarian cancer. As soon as I found out that Jennifer had started this, I logged on to her blog and ordered the cutest T-shirt for my mom. There are also adorable totes and ballcaps that will let anyone fighting cancer know you are thinking of them.

Since launching SCEC, Jennifer and Leslie have realized that we are all touched by cancer in some way. As sad as it is to admit, almost all of us have a relative or friend who has battled this terrible disease. For this reason, I wanted to make all of you aware of Jennifer’s Mompreneurship! Smarty Mom: Sarah Hahne

Happy Smarty Mom Saturday! It’s my pleasure to introduce Sarah Hahne. Sarah comes highly recommended as a Smarty Mom from loyal reader and fellow Smarty Mom Summer Riley. Sarah is a stay-at-home mom who has lived in the Triad her whole life. She and her husband Brian have an adorable son Andy who is two.

Once an assistant wedding photographer, Sarah started Ardmore Photography after the birth of her son. She, of course, took thousands of photographs of him as well as other friends’ children, and her neighbors, who work in public relations and marketing, urged her to start a website to display her pictures. The day after she launched her site, she had a client call to book a photo session! Since then, she’s been shooting mostly children and families.

“I just love capturing moments in peoples’ lives that fly by too quickly. I look at how big Andy is already and I am so glad that I have pictures to help remember that time when he was a baby. He’ll never be as young as he is today so I keep snapping away. It is a joy and gift to me to be able to capture those moments for others,” Sarah said.

So, let’s get to know Sarah a little better.

In addition to her part-time photography business, Sarah also works in Radiation Oncology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with a research group that coordinates cancer prevention trials for community clinical sites around the country. Sarah works two days per week in regulatory affairs and website design.

On top of all this, Sarah enjoys enjoy cooking, talking with her husband over a good cup of coffee, and taking walks around the neighborhood with friends.

You definitely have the best of both worlds being able to balance two part-time jobs while still being at home to raise your son. What advice do you have for other moms seeking a similar balance?
As cliché as it sounds, follow your dreams. God puts them in our hearts for a reason. And of course, take lots of pictures along the way.

But, I’ll be honest with you…it is a struggle to balance two PT jobs and a family. If it were not for my family I would not be able to work outside the home and pursue photography. I am incredibly fortunate to have a husband, parents, and friends who generously support me. I was hesitant in starting Ardmore Photography because of the time commitment but God kept opening doors for me. Although balance might be more of a goal than reality, I feel like I am doing what God has called me to. Thankfully He surrounded me with friends and family to encourage me in the process!

Now let’s focus on your life as a mom, and ask some fun “mom-type” questions!

Favorite place to get a good deal on kids clothes?
Andy is the only grandchild on both sides, so his Grandmas (Emma and GiGi) keep him looking adorable. I also have generous friends who hand down their children’s clothes to me.

What is your favorite family activity?
Day trips to Blowing Rock complete with a hike, playing in their city park, taking pictures along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and having lunch at Storie Street Grill.

Favorite “mommy-time” activity?
Having good coffee and conversation with friends.

Best place to eat lunch with the kids?
Brown Bag it at Miller Park

Favorite place to eat dinner out with the kids?
We are still searching for our favorite dinner spot, but we enjoy going to Mary’s Of Course for brunch on Saturdays. Mary has so much artwork and other decorations around the restaurant, Andy is mesmerized with it. When the weather is nice, you can sit outside, which is always a plus for kids. The wait staff is always very friendly and welcoming to Andy.

Funniest thing Andy has ever said?
Andy is just now learning to talk, but our family still laughs about Andy naming his Grandfather, Bubba. We’ll see if it sticks!

Favorite park in the Triad?
We love the convenience, slides, and shade of Miller Park. During the warmer months, Andy and I stop by Miller Park on walks to the grocery store.

Mini-van or SUV?
SUV

Best thing about raising a family in the Triad?
The people in the Triad really value community which is a necessity for our young family. We are fortunate to have close friends within walking distance of our house who welcome impromptu play dates and backyard cookouts.

Best kept secret in the Triad?
Ardmore Photography, of course!

Best birthday party you have attended?
Birthday parties with a moon walk…WOW!

I could not live without my... iMac. I love the big screen to see details when working in Photoshop on pictures for clients.

Etsy So Cool!

If you're an eBay junkie (like me in my previous life before I had my own blog:-), then you may want to cruise around Etsy, your place to buy and sell all things handmade. Thanks to my Smarty friend, Nikki, I was introduced to Etsy a few months ago when she started selling her presh monogrammed items under The Freckled Thread, a la Etsy. Since I'm very green to Etsy but think the concept is brilliant, I turned to Nikki to educate our Smarty readers on this savvy handmade marketplace.

Here's Nikki (with a few of Jen P's random comments, you'll know which ones they are;-)
Etsy only allows handmade items. Etsy first launched their site in June 2005. The sheer diversity and quality of all the handmade items on Etsy might surprise you. You can find cheesy items that look thrown together and you can also find high quality goods. Some of the things you can find are: glass pendants, pottery, furniture, sculptures, paintings, clothing, keychains, baby items, purses and handbags, greeting cards, hats, buttons, dolls, masks, beads, soap, blankets, toys, and the list goes on. Unlike eBay, Etsy is not an auction site. There is no bidding involved, the price you see is the price you get. One thing that eBay and Etsy have in common is the feedback system. Etsy sellers take the feedback system just as seriously as eBay sellers. Etsy sellers rely on good feedback for their reputation. I have found that Etsy sellers are more eager to establish a friendly and personal experience with their customers. All items are hand-crafted by the shop owner, so there is a true sense of pride with every item.

Etsy Fees:
With Etsy, you receive 5 large high quality images, description space and 4 months of exposure for any item you list for a fee of 20 cents. Etsy gets 3.5% of your selling price. You can list roughly 9 items for the same listing fee that it costs you on eBay to list 1 time for 7 days. So for example: a $10 item cost $1.30 to list for 3-7 days on eBay. A $10 item cost 20 cents to list for 4 months on Etsy. eBay gets 88 cents of the final value of a $10 item where Etsy only takes 35 cents of the final value of a $10 item. Etsy's prices are awesome for the seller!

How to search Etsy:
There are several fun features to help you search through the hundreds of items on Etsy. The treasuries are themed galleries compiled by Etsy members. "Pounce" shows recently sold items and other items available from that seller. "The Time Machine" shows items as they are listed. "Shop Local" allows you to support local artists or crafters in your area (very Smarty - we LOVE local!). Etsy also has the basic categories that can be very helpful. If you know of a shop that you want to look at, you go under Sellers:usernames and type in the shop name or you can access a specific shop by www.theshopname.etsy.com. For example my address would be www.FreckledThread.etsy.com (hint, hint!).

My personal Etsy story:
I decided to open a shop on Etsy after many friends and family members had been encouraging me to start my own website. Well, to a working mom and mother of 3 that started like a big undertaking. So, after hearing about Etsy from a good friend this sounded like a leap I was willing to take. It was SO easy to set up my own shop on Etsy. I bought my shop banner from another "Etsian" and the steps to list and item are so simple and easy to follow - especially for one who is not too computer savvy. All you have to do to start is click on the "SELL" icon and it is laid out for you to have a successful experience. What I like best about Etsy is the family community you feel. Whenever, I have had a question and I had to contact their support, I always received a very friendly, cheerful, prompt and personal email. Another thing I like is the personal and friendly feeling when you contact any other seller. You can really feel the pride they feel in their handcrafted item and they really want you to enjoy it.

My shop is all custom monogramming. I have a lot of baby and children's items. But I also have fun gifts for friends, co-workers, teachers, and coaches.
