Smarty Scoop on Weekend Events

Welcome to December! Wow, how time flies! While you are out hustling and bustling among the holiday crowds, be sure to take some time this Sunday, December 6 to enjoy High Point Museum's 26th Annual Holiday Open House between 1 and 4 pm. This Smarty sponsored event has become a tradition with local families.

Come for a day of special reenactments, music, demonstrations, refreshments and hands-on activities. Activities include historic games, story time, and crafts. New this year, take a peek at its collections storage and ask the collections staff questions about preserving your personal collections. There is fun for all ages, and the event is FREE. No reservations required. Here is a run down of the day's event:

1 pm to 1:30 pm ~ Youth Jazz Orchestra from High Point Area Arts Council
1:30 pm to 2 pm ~ Celebration Band from High Point Area Arts Council
2 pm to 2:30 pm ~ Children's and Youth Chorales from High Point Area Arts Council
2:30 pm to 3 pm ~ Happy Tones from Culler Senior Center

Go “Nutz about Downtown” this Holiday Season!

Downtown Winston-Salem
Get ready to shop, dine and enjoy world-class entertainment in downtown Winston-Salem this holiday season. Best of all, the price just got a little cheaper thanks to a new holiday season promotion called Nutz About Downtown! Produced by the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership in conjunction with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ production of The Nutcracker, the Nutz About Downtown promotion will turn Downtown Winston-Salem into “holiday central” for the entire family. Nutz About Downtown runs from November 24 until December 31. Nutz About Downtown provides discounts and/or special offers during the holiday season. Each participating merchant has an offer good for the entire holiday period. In addition, each participating merchant has a special offering or discount called the “Nutcracker Feature” on performance dates of The Nutcracker. A Nutcracker ticket stub or playbill must be presented at the participating establishment to receive the Nutcracker Feature special.

Barnes and Nobles Bookfair Day
Saturday, December 5, 10am-6pm
Join us this day at Barnes & Noble at the Friendly Center Shops to help support the Museum! Museum staff will be at the bookstore along with Mrs. Claus to ring in the holidays and do arts and crafts with the kids. A percentage of purchases at B&N this day will benefit GCM.

Designer Finds Occasional Sale
Friday 9:30am-1pm, and Saturday 10am-1pm

Four designers/artists are teaming up under one roof for a unique and one of a kind Occasional Sale. You’ll find gifts, furniture, décor, accessories, personalized items, pet décor/accessories, holiday items and more. There is an eclectic mix of old and new.

Urban Holiday Bazaar

Art/craft vendors will sell their handmade products in front of the coffee house. There is also a wine tasting.

Holiday Open House at RCC Archdale Center
Friday, December 4 from 4 – 8 pm
Randolph Community College’s Archdale Center, just off Highway 311 south of Archdale.
Randolph Community College's Archdale Center will feature local elementary and middle school artwork during its Holiday Open House. Patrons can vote on their favorite artwork (a penny for each vote); proceeds will go to Relay for Life. First, second, and third place ribbons will be given for both the elementary school and middle school categories. The award ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 4. Light refreshments will be served.The Archdale Center will be open for early viewing and voting Monday-Thursday, 8 a.m.- 9 p.m. and on Fridays, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Voting ends at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4. "A Christmas Carol"

Performances by Alamance Jazz Band and Season's Best Carolers in the Amphitheatre and Civil Defense in the Depot, strolling performances in the downtown area by the Elon Carolers, Salvation Army Band and others, "Christmas Goat" petting area in front of The Glass Angel, hayrides, the Christmas Train, May Memorial Library and The Times News Kids events at the Library, and visits to the Restored Caboose. "The Nutcracker"

A guided walking tour by candlelight through the Historic District. Includes music, games, food and drink and interacting with staff. Space is limited and tours are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations recommended. The Children's Home in Winston-Salem is having their Community Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony this weekend too. It's Sunday, 12/6, starting at 6 p.m. Come early to hear The Piedmont Wind Quintet playing Christmas music in Woosley Chapel. More details at www.tchome.org.
