Smarty Alert: Flubber + Hair = Catastrophe

By Rachel H

OK, so remember our post about Flubber? Well, it is a great craft and tons of fun, but I thought I'd give you a warning that it does not mix well with hair!

My son, Jake, decided to put a huge clump of Flubber on his head this weekend. At first, I will admit, it was actually pretty funny, as he looked like Medusa. But then when he went to take the Flubber off his head, it was stuck all over. As you can tell from pictures above, it was GROSS! He was smiling here, but not when I tried to comb this stuff out!

First we just put him in the shower and tried to wash it out. No luck. Then we put ice on it, no luck again. We tried to comb it out and heard nothing but screams from Jake. My husband claimed he was done and headed upstairs to get the electric razor and give Jake a crew cut. Of course I was not wanting the shaved head and I was really not wanting to pull out the peanut butter, so googled, "How do I get glue out of hair?" and they suggested Baby Oil. I poured it all over his head, let it sit for about 20 minutes and then slowly but surely, it came out!

We got one of my daughter's Barbie combs since it had smaller teeth and it worked like a charm! It took a long time, but we got most out and then he jumped in the shower to wash out the remainder. All is now back to normal and I am prepared for the next "something is stuck in my hair" episode.

Rachel! That is awful!! I will never forget when my sister & I loved to play beauty parlor and I was "styling" her hair, but was also chewing gum, and when I started to say something to her, the gum fell out and landed in her hair. It was awful & I was in a lot of trouble. The new rule in our house was no gum chewing while playing beauty parlor. It's so awful to have to learn the hard way. Thanks for sharing with us so we can be prepared!!

Oh Rachel, thank God for Google. What did parents do before the internet? I guess that explains the crew cut phase? Poor Jake!

What do you Google when one daughter throws the red wax covering from a Babybel cheese into another daughter's white-blonde hair while you are driving your minivan and don't realize what has transpired? What DID we do before we could shout, "to the internet!"?

Oh - this story just made my day! We too had flubber stuck once in Lauren's hair. Luckily just a little bit and we could snip it out! Gotta file away the baby oil idea for next time :)

Unfortunately, baby oil didn't work for my children and they ended up with a trim on their heads and me feeling awful.

Vinegar. I used pickling as that is what was in the house at the time. It took less than 30secs to remove about 3oz of that goop! Her's was blue and stuck to a large chunk of her bangs. So again use Vinegar works instantly. (eg. think about what happens to bread when dissolved in water, make that hot water. That's the effect vinegar has on flubber

We just tried the baby oil for a student at our preschool and it worked! We were able to comb it all out and the child is no longer upset. Thank you very much for your story!
